Cable housing groove on swing arm

Recently while removing my rear disc brake cable and housing, I noticed that the cable housing had started wearing a groove on top of the swing arm.  Anyone else have this happen?  I can imagine what an Avid Flack Jacket would do... [smiley=worry.gif]

I raised the cable housing temporarily with zip ties. Anyone have a more permanent trick fix?  Calling OP...

Actually, this is happening to my hydraulic cable mount.  If it wears any more, I won't have a mount left. [smiley=worry.gif]  I was planning to go Home Depot and see if I can find something to slip over the cable housing that was a softer material (like foam or rubber tubing) and zip tie it back on.

In your case if the wear is near the disk brake, you can slip a large inner tube over the swing arm to protect it.

lay down a strip of black electricians tape under the cable and/or anywhere cabling touches or rubs any part of the carbon frame or swingarm.  

i've had several instances where my shimano cables started to rub into the carbon and put down the tape - no more wear.  i put dabs on the mainframe at the head tube, under the hydraulic cable guides and all the way down the length of the swingarm - everywhere the cable comes near the carbon.  we've had reports here of standard cables rubbing thru carbon on the crosslinks from those who didn't use the cable guides inside the arms - i lay down some tape there as well.  

my rear fender system that caps over the swingarm mount was the worst offender of wear - i had to fill the grooves with a clear epoxy

black electricians tape on the carbon and not necessarily on the cable, should do the job - it has for me.  it virtually disappears on the bike.

I had the same problem on my 5500 and I put a ring of electrical tape around the cable near where it rubs - enough to raise the cable up off the carbon.  So far, so good.

electrician's tape is a great tip.
of course, if money is no object and you wanted to be really high tech, get some lizard skins carbon fiber patches.

Protection is a good idea! I've seen poorly routed cable housing rub clear through the paint and well into aluminum! Yikes... (and that was on a high-end bike).

My new road bike has some clear vinyl "tape" in a couple of places. I believe it is "Stay Tuff."  It virtually disappears, but looks like it would hold up quite well (tougher than electrician's tape). It's nice because you can use it anywhere (as opposed to electricians tape, which looks awful unless it is the same color as the part you put it on!) Comes with a vinyl chainstay protector and six 3/4" diameter clear vinyl "dots." Cambria has them for $2.50. Your LBS might have them too.
