Retail prices for 1997 line

Howdy -

Anyone have any information on the original MSRP for the 1997 ProFlex line?

I bought an 857 XT in early 1998 for about $1800 new, but am interested in MSRP for the other bikes from this model year.

If I remember right, the 957 was 3,000 or 3,100 at my LBS. Of course, they quit handling K2 after they found the Proflex bikes at the LA bike expo for 50% off-killed the resale value for the bikes in So Cal...dumb

That's how I got my 856. The begining of 1997 I stumbled into a LBS that had a Proflex 856 full XT, full suspension upgrade with speed spring instead of the MCU's ect. a race ready XC bike with a MSRP of $2900 on sale for $1100. I thought what a deal so I bought it. Best deal I thought ever & still ride it at least once a week. I have another xc bike that I let friends ride I alwasy get on the 856.

reading the above two posts is one of the TWO or maybe three reasons what so many LBS dropped k2 line with all the bad rep and poor CS to owners and bike shops

I had the same experience with my '98 5000.

I bought it early in '99 for $1200.  I believe it retailed the prior year for $2500+.  I dont know the exact figure though.

Yeah, I had a trusty 856 but fell for the 957(end of 97), bought it and decided to sell the 856 (a week before the expo-swapmeet) They were selling there new for $900. After that nobody wanted a used Proflex...or even any year-old bike because knowledgeable people knew that they could find super deals on one or two-year-old bikes at the expo...killed the resale value of good bikes and really hurt the LBS. Dumb...manufacturers kill the LBS and resale value by making backdoor deals to wholesalers(swapmeeters) and interneters. No incentive to remain true to product identity. I can understand a little discount passed down to a LBS but 1/2 off to retail is stupid.

Wait a minute.  Isn't the same thing still going on with last year's K2s being sold at Supergo and such at big discounted prices.

Yep...same technique...and they wonder why K@ bikes just never took off...DOH [smiley=disbelief.gif]
