Always checking MTBR, every day! Saw these, if none of you get em, I just might. However, now that I have a front fork that supports disk, I may just go for disk. These Maguras work well I hear, but they are some ugly beasties!



I also wonder if they exert too much braking force outward on the rear swingarm (even with that booster) What has your guys' experience been with these?

I've never used them but I've heard they weigh a lot, plus they don't solve the problem of dirt and water deteriorating braking action. I would skip them and move on to disc if you ride in sloppy conditions and/or  extended downhill sections.



If you decide to use these brakes, it might be a good idea to install one of these brake boosters, just to be safe.

No experience with the Maguras, (although I've heard they're the most powerful rim brakes out there), but there is NO WAY that they exert too much outward force on the rear swingarm. I can't imagine a swingarm that is more solid than the EVO swingarm. It's just too beefy.

One thing I'd worry about is parts.  I'm sure they are still available, but your LBS might have to track them down for you.  Better to stick with readily available stuff.

I really just wanted to let y'all know there was a full set for $50, I dont really plan to run the Magura's.  My plan is to install my front V-brake on the fox and ride my bike for a while   However, I cant do this becuase no LBS in my area nor does fox have the brake bosses that screw into the posts on the fork! If anyone out there has a set they think would fit a fox (im sure its standard for more than just fox)  I would gladly take them. The ones from the crosslink are a much larger thread.

Eventually If i find a good deal on Avid Disc Mechs I will install that on the front first, and then perhaps move to the rear. The Caveats come with my current setup. To run disc, I need disc hubs so I might as well just get a new wheelkit built. My XT levers are brake/shifter combos so to go hydraulic means I dump my shifters too. I think 5500C did a good job of upgrading his stopping power in the front, but not spending a whole lotta money. I think Ryhnolites on deore disc hubs would be a good idea, then I get a set of two but Can run my V's in the back till I get the RDI and another disc brake.

I ran Maguras on My 96 Animal (which had them as stock) and I loved them more then anything.  They had the best feeling and best feathering far beyond any V-Brake ever has.   I sure do miss thpse Maguras now that I am riding an OZM and sold the Animal to one of my buddies.   It didnt matter what kinda of riding conditions I was in those brakes worked no matter what.

Hey Maguras are not ugly ! I had em on my Evo with boosters and they are great, wet or dry. Modulation is superior to any I've ever tried [rim or disc] which I guess is why trials riders love them. They are tricky to set up but not as bad as the MTBR reviews suggest, Avid Mech's are easier to set up and powerful but they are more grabby than Maguras IMO.The wt of both is not bad. I think using rims that have a braking surface and disc hubs is a great idea, especially if you are like me, always switching stuff around between bikes or if you keep breaking stuff, but I would get the XT hubs not deore, for just a few dollars more. Pricepoint has excellent prices on Rhinolite wheelsets and Avid mechs, I just got some! The reason why i ditched the Maguras is that I kept breaking the levers and think they are a weak design, and yes i do run my levers loose on the bars, and replacements are hard to get and expensive. Avid's can be used with any cable lever and I never broke any Avid levers! Another problem I had was tyre clearance on the rear between the booster and my 2.4's. That said ,Maguras are cool !
