Profile picture meanings?
« on: July 18, 2014, 01:14:35 am »
I was just wondering in general what do people's profile picture represent. Mine is easy it's just my 857 but some of you have some cool pictures?

W2zero you have a spider made from metal? I few weeks ago I saw very similar spiders whilst working in an under ground cable pit. They were about 2" - 2 1/2" wide and the bodies were not much smaller than the end of your little finger! I don't mind spiders but I didn't like the look of these. I took a photo but kept well away!!

Hmmm... just realized I am (was) about the only one with a photo of the person, rather than something else... so I've changed.  It's my Giant, partly because it gets most of the miles these days, but mostly because I don't have a good photo of the 857.  Perhaps I should remedy that in the next little while... I already feel like a bit of an infidel by not riding it regularly...  ;D

Wicked looking little devil there Spokes.  Spiders don't freak me out too much, mostly situational I guess.  Sometimes I just get creatively carried away in the shop and make stuff that has no particular rhyme or reason, just keeps me occupied for a bit.  I had made a large (24") black widow for a Halloween decoration and it was getting tatty so made the avatar.  Original was polyester foam and wire hangars covered with newspaper.  This later one is of some better wire and sheetmetal with plastic grocery bags wrapping the legs and flamed to shrink into shape.  I later made another that only had a small piece of metal on the thorax to attach the wire legs to and the rest was all plastic bags.  The one pictured is the deluxe model.  I am presently toying with the idea of making a new one and mounting it on a stripped down iRobot Roomba vacuum cleaner and letting it scare the crap out of the wee monsters October next.  Here are a few of the fabrication pictures. http://s6.photobucket.com/user/w2zero/library/tin%20spider?sort=3&start=all&page=1

Wow that's some garage you have there. You've got some quality machines to play with and I'd feel safer around your spider than my one!

I can't help it.  I'm a fabricator, I must fabricate and it doesn't matter what purpose it serves.  Making chips, sparks and swarf pleases me.

All power to you sir! I know what you mean as my other passion is old vehicles. I have my trusty mig and spot welders along with my tools and workshop. There is nothing more satisfying than to make something shiny out of an old wreck.

Very cool! That's got such a presence. What's that model car famous for, had it been used in a film? My uncle had s Pontiac Firebird for a few years. That was a cool car.

There was a HiPo 271 optioned 64 Fairlane in part of Blue Velvet in a chase scene.  Very light car for the power.  Mostly the 64's are known for 100 of them built for Ford by Dearborn Steel Tubing.  They dropped in 427 cubic inch engines that were jokingly rated at 425 hp (actually around 550 hp) with some other suspension modifications aluminum and fiberglass parts and proceeded to roll over the other manufacturers in national drag racing.  The 100 units satisfied the homologation rule for a factory "stock" car and weighed 3400lbs, much less than the Ford Galaxie lightweight racers of the time.  The actual stock production family car available to the public weighed in at 2900.  They called the result a Thunderbolt and any with a good racing history can sell over 100k with some famous examples pushing the next digit.

The 1950's & later Fairlanes were full size cars until 1962 when it was completely redesigned as a mid size car and shared the platform with the Mercury Meteor for 62-63 but had completely different sheetmetal.  The Fairlanes were similar 62-63 with new sheetmetal in 64 and again in 65 although everything under the tin was the same.
Here is a shot of my car at the cruise in at a local museum.
