Carbon x-link with magura rim brakes
«
on:

Hi everyone. I would like to mount magura rim brakes on my carbon crosslink and I was wondering if anyone else here has done that.
I am concerned about the L-arm adjuster contacting the carbon leg and possibly weakening it.
The solution I thought of was to epoxy a piece of titanium or aluminum to the spot that the L-arm will contact.
Any suggestions/oppinions?
Thanks!

i have a set of mag rim hydraulics (now in a box) on my crosslinks - no touching problems that i remember - worked great - used the magura brake bridge with them.

I use Magura rim brakes on my Proflex 4500 with Al X-link. Works fine (with ceramic rims). I also use the magura bridge.

Hello again. Thanks for the replies.
I found a pic on the net that shows the part I am concerned about. It has to touch the carbon leg on the crosslink to hold the brake in place. This picture is of a rear brake but the front is the same.

I guess if you didn't have any problems with your setup OP, I'll be fine too.

no problems, mine ran fine -
if the arm has to touch to lock the unit in place, then that's the way it is - i remember trying to reverse mine to avoid touching but remember now that it did.
make sure you put a little piece of black electricians tape on the carbon arm where it touches - that'll help prevent wear on the leg.
i like my magura hydraulics - too bad they're just sitting in the box. i do remember having a problem adjusting them due to the fact that the brake pivot bosses on the crosslink and the swingarms weren't lined up properly and i had to adjust the units over to the side to work properly, but just a bit.
(enough to annoy me tho')
they work great - very stong

i saw some carbon fibre patches in one of the mags to stick on the frame to prevent cable rub, don't know who makes em but would be ideal in this case i guess. I had some clearance problems with the bridge thingy using maguras on my evo 4, but i was using 2.4's. I love those brakes and would still be using if the levers weren't a p.o.s[ i broke 3 in 5 monthes]..if you see any compatible Altec levers for sale grab em, they are much stronger but i don't think they make em anymore

I have a 5500C and HS33 for (I think) a year of 2 now, checked the spots you are afraid of and think everything is OK. And I even have no protection between the touching parts.

Thanks numbnuts, I'll see if I can find some of those patches.
I have an old set of HS22's. They are a bit heavier but the levers are made of aluminum. I haven't had a problem in 5 years. If you want to still use your brakes, have a look on ebay for HS22 levers... probably about 30 bucks for the set.

Lizard Skins makes the carbon fiber patches to prevent cable rub. They are made of real carbon fiber so they are durable and work well.
