Best way to remove melted elastomer goop.
« on: January 28, 2013, 10:47:05 am »
I don't want to wear my melted elastomer as some sort of badge of honor, I want it gone, with as minimal damage as possible.
It came off the forks fairly easy, but the rear swaybar is a mess and it looks like it's a painted part.
I tried isopropyl alcohol & it made it look white in some spots & smeared the silver below.

Any suggestions?
I was going to try an automotive bug & tar remover, but I thought I ask the forum first.

Thanks!

Alcohol will not damage the paint on your bike. It's made of better stuff than that. (or at least it was originally, if it wasn't repainted.)

If the elastomer goop is too sticky to peel off, soak the part in steaming-hot water to soften the elastomer goop. If the elastomer goop is too squishy to peel off, soak the part in ice-water to harden the elastomer goop.

I agree, mine just peeled of with a bit of care. I then used T cut to remove any slight blemishes off the paint.
