crackset rings- where to find?

Hello bikers:
After a search on the posted topics couldnīt find any with  this subject.
I  need to replace my transmission from my  856 and  the only problem is the rings.
Where can i  get rings of 5 holes?
Is it easier to buy a new crankset that comes with the rings?

I'm running a Cook Brothers RSR crank on my lightweight 856 build and really like the 5-bolt (110/74 BCD) Race Face Racerings. They are 7075 alloy, and come in silver and black (the "Team Rings") variations...for easier upshifting they are ramped and pinned, and the big ring has these steel "shift chips" (essentially little steel remps pinned to the inside of the ring). which really seem to help. They'll set you back around $80 or so for a set. I think they also come in the compact 5-bolt variety, as well as 4-bolt.

have a look on ebay - there are load sof 2nd hand 5 bolt compact and standard rings/chainsets out there

Exactly! You just need to measure whether you have a "Compact" or "ATB" crank.
The measurement you are interested in is the "BCD" , Bolt Circle Diameter.
Compact is 94mm/58mm  (my XP-X (856) Sugino OEM crankest is this size
ATB is 110mm/74mm

Thanks guys for your oppinions. But this is what is in my perspective:

1- Buy this cranckset http://www.fizzbikes.com/?topic=product&cat=4&product=1007&lang=pt&lang=en and for the future will be easier to get 4 bolt rings +-120Eur

2- keep the actual cranckset,wich is very tired but still working, and buy the suggested rings. +-80Eur

I am more with option nš 1 despite the higher investment but still open to nš2 .
I will decide soon, but if you could comment the options I will be more confident.

Well, there's not a lot that can go wrong with crank arms, aside from tightening bolts too hard on square taper cranks, or not tightening them enough. I don't see 94/58 rings going away anytime soon, at least as replacements go. Heck, I still run XTR M952 cranks on most of my bikes and only this started collecting replacement 4- (Middleburn) and 5-arm (stock XTR part) spiders to use when the spiderless big rings give up the ghost.

Heck, I'm still using 110/74 rings, which were slowly fading away until some road rider pushed hard for them...at least that's what Sheldon Brown's page on the subject says.

Heck, I still run XTR M952 cranks on most of my bikes and only this started collecting replacement 4- (Middleburn) and 5-arm (stock XTR part) spiders to use when the spiderless big rings give up the ghost.

That is an issue I am having at the moment, I have a set of mid 90's XT cranks that I love, but replacing the big ring looks to be the death of them.

The sugiano's that came on my bike have been great, I just threw on new replacement Shimano rings and they went straight on no issues. I prefer the XT cranks, but with no replacement big rings, they will probably not see any action anymore.

 probably have XTs from the same year as my XTRs, where the big ring is also the spider to which the other rings attach. The big ring is held on from the back if the crank arm by a notched lockring, right? If that's the case then you have a few options if you really like the crank arms:

- on US eBay right now search for "xtr 952". You'll see a few auctions for XTR drive side crank arms with separate 5-arm 110/74 spiders (which should work on your XT crank...if not I'll buy it from you). The BIN price of $48 on these things is good given that i've seen the spider alone go for over $50 in the past.

- Middleburn makes a 4-arm 104/94 spider for old XTR cranks that should work as well. Avail for around $50 as well, and is s nice piece of machine work.

Hi:

Once again thanks for all opinions and suggestions. I have considered them but my final decision was to buy a new cranckset and I allready did. This was due to the need of renewal my old cranckset and upgraded it. It appears thet it will be easier to find the rings with 4 bolts in the future.

For future reference:

These guys : http://www.specialites-ta.com/produits/plateauxbmx_gb.htm still make every chainring for every crankset that has removable chainrings.
With them I have never had a problem equipping my super retro middleburn 5 hole large diameter set,
or the modern 4 hole obscure truvativ carbon either.
Good dealers should be able to get them still, If you have any trouble I have a superb independant dealer that has everything in stock, I couls post

That C (and maybe the rest of the logi ) isn't going to last long.
I took the lovely CNC edges off my middleburns ages ago. The plastic heel cups on modern MTB shoes wreak havoc on the cranks.

Interestingly enoug I have a pair of carbon cranks on another mtb and they are shaped so there's no contact, so I don't think it's because I ride like a duck.

It's only being used on the road though and I have never been a heel rubber, hopefully it will last ok ... 

Perhaps the combination of small feet and spd's help some what, only ever had the toe clip strap mark them near the pedal end
