856 vector 2 fork spring question
« on: September 23, 2009, 08:57:19 pm »
Hi all,
My 856 rebuild is nearing completion, but I ran into a small snag tonight.
I am replacing the elastomers with titanium springs.   However, the front spring is about a half centimeter longer than the stock elastomer stack.  I can get both the nut (part 18) and the rounded bottom part with the shaft hole (part 8) from the ods_service.pdf file, from the bottom right picture:

http://idriders.com/proflex/resources/ods_service.pdf

Although I can get both on, when I put it on the bike, it is slightly too long to fit.  If I remove the nut, and just screw on the rounded part (part 8), then it fits perfect.  Any issue with me leaving the nut (part 18) off the bike??

Thanks much,
Mark

i think you are talking about the preload nut...however it may play a role in locking the shaft in place...I think i would be very careful to ensure the shaft is threaded in good and tight maybe with permanent(or at least semipermanent loktite).

My ally nut is ony half threaded, the other half is clearance to go over the damper shaft, esentially adding a little preload.

If this was replaced with a half / lock nut you would gain a couple of mm without compromising the locking / security of the damper shaft.

I wouldnt trust it without some form of locknut on there ...

Are you UK based ? I have some M10 SS halfnuts on the way to me, can post you one if you like ?

I also think the locktite will do the job. I like to use red loctite for that job, and that requires some heat to loosen.

Fantastic news, that will work perfectly then.

WD Pro, thank you very much for the offer.  I think a 1/4 height nut might do the trick, but the locktite is the easiest solution.

Thanks again everyone!
