shock for 98 beast
« on: February 14, 2009, 08:07:40 am »
i have a 1998 beast that i replaced the shock with a risse genesis in november, i have already had to send it back once due to oil leaking and it appears to be leaking again.  does anyone know of any other companies that sell a shock for this model bike, it goes through the frame.
thanks,

I wouldn't give up on the Risse - they are normally top notch - was it new? What have they said about it leaking? Many of us here have used Risse and while there may be some teething problems it usually gets sorted and you have a great shock.

Is this the shock with the cone shaped end? If so, I am not aware of any other shock that will fit direct except the Noleen NR2 or NR4 which may have come on the Beast in the first place.

Otherwise you can fabricate an adaptor and run other shocks.

yes it has a rod made onto the piston end of the shock.  i like the risse, everything i read about it was good before purchase.  the first time it was dripping oil when just parking bike overnight. took about 10 days to get it back and i think they just replaced it straight up.  now it seems that when riding, the piston gets a lot of oil on it, even dripping on frame some but if i wipe it down it is not leaking overnight.  this is my first air shock, don't know if this is normal or not.  it works fine and hate to have to send it in again if nothing is wrong.

not normal in my (albeit limited) experience. I'd keep sending it back till you're happy. I know others here have had issues with re-valving to get the damping just right (took several attempts) but they got there in the end.

You're kind of limited anyway in alternatives.

I agree, not normal. Probably a seal or shaft issue. Risse is great about getting it perfect. I have dealt with 3, and I currently have 2. If anything, mine don't leak enough, but more break-in will take care of that.

Other than the leaking, how does it feel?
Send it back, and ask to tweak the tuning if needed. Risse realizes that the Genesis may need tweaking to your needs. I sent my crosslink shock back 3 times. Last time was the charm.

Can't beat the price and service. Once it is right, it should last a long time.

the feel is fine just dont like the oil all over the frame and know at some point it will be out of oil, also hate not being able to ride for 10 days to 2 weeks at at time.
