Oz bottom bracket/crank set fit & recommendation
« on: January 14, 2009, 12:35:07 pm »
hey guys,
I'm going to look at replacing my bottom bracket/crank combo this year.
currently it's all 'old school': http://bit.ly/jIjM (bottom bracket and crank set by these guys)
anyway, i'm going to grab one of these: http://bit.ly/1FfOzV
so first question is - will this fit ok?
then... carbon crank set recommendation to go this bottom bracket - anyone?
i'm running 34/42 (no granny), a little concerned with chain ring fit etc on my Oz.
thanks in advance :)

I am hoping someone with some good input will respond. I am collecting parts to build up an OZ so I would like to know also.

you need some input from OZ guys...I think there are some tricks to learn about OZ bottom brackets, not the least of which are some alignment issues...have you guys tried a searh of this forum,I am sure it has been discussed in the past.Contributors with specific knowledge are OP and Hammer.....maybe search on their posts?

I am sure the Chris King BB will fit, but says compatible with Shimano cranks. I don't know of any Carbon cranks that are compatible with shimano BBs.

Maybe Chris King tech support has a recommendation.

I have often considered an American Classic Issis BB to mate with an original FSA carbon Pro crankset. Not altogether the lightest, but sexy. Beyond that, I am a square taper devotee.

Good luck, and keep us posted.

I've got a FSA carbon crank (44/34/22) on a standard OEM Bottom Bracket (Shimano XT UN73 Sqr Taper 73x113mm) on my 4000se and I plan to put an Octalink Carbon FSA crank onto my Oz rebuild project

I might consider changing the BB for a 115 or 118 to give a little more offset ("Q") but it all works fine as it is.

good feedback so far guys - thanks for the input. I'll do some research myself and post anything I find here.

In my Altura catalogue the FSA carbon cranks are £499.99. WHich is an awful lot of cash, in todays economic climate.
As for external BB , ie hollow tubes with larger, more outboard  bearings , the RAce FAce ones can be destroyed in a couple of months by winter riding. They just dont last. The one i smahed open had lots of loose bearings covered in mud and crap.
Hope make a rebuildable X type BB, C£60 with cartridge bearings and decent seals.

Ck also now make a BB for £110 , which is servicable on teh bike, by squeezing freash grease from the inside out, via a special  grease gun. Its another £30 for teh gun itself. I do not know if any other grease guns will work.

Shimano BB' s designed for Hollowtech 2 are ,apparently interchangable with RaceFace , but i have not used one myself.

Ceramic x types BB's are among the hardest wearing ,Acros or Accoss make one for C£60. Avoid superstar, they get slammed on STW

Someone makes a very nice looking Carbon Nior crankset, bit less cash tha the FSA.

Everyone always recommends getting the faces done every time a BB is changed, all to do with load sharing. There are different ways of tightening too, either grease the threads if no compression ring, or grease them then tuck up teh compression ring ( it might be the other way round so don'tquote me onthat , its something i was told by a bike mech)
The downside of every climb is in the upside
