What do you haul your bike on or in?

A couple of replies on the what are you riding now got me thinking about what we use to haul our toys around with. I just got rid of a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am with 127,000 miles on it and got a Chevrolet HHR. I'm afraid I do go for new cars but I usually buy them outright and then drive them until the wheels fall off. I also have a 1994 GMC Safari Van with over 150,000 miles on it that gets used for every kind of use and abuse you can imagine. The wifes car (which I can only drive on vacations when we have to take the camper) is a Gas guzzling Chevrolet trailblazer.
My old Grand Am (now the pride and joy of a friends sixteen year old daughter)
My new Toy hauler. One bike goes inside. If I need to take more, I have a hitch style rack that holds up to 4 bikes
And a couple of pics of the Safari at DALMAC last year. I hauled seven guys with bikes and camping gear for a week long bike tour.
I supposed I should be taking these pictures with my Proflex or K2 mounted on the bike racks.

After 20 years of various German cars I finally gave up. Enough thousand dollar throwout bearings, snapped half shafts and miserable air conditioners!
For transporting the two wheeler(s) there's nothing better than a Honda Element. Just can't break it and who would steal it? Actually, I can put three MTB's inside with both wheels on! Which is exactly the plan for this weekend trip into the Ouachita's of western Arkansas. Yeeha.
Now for fun without a bike... maybe a just little Germany in the garage...

1990 BMW 535 5 spd manual(250 000 ks).....i can fit my mtb in the boot with both wheels off(it is a 20 inch). If I want to take my road bike too, that can also go in the boot but the wheels go behind my seat.Ussually its just the one though.I have had "hitch mounts" on my other cars, but for any long trips i ussually like to have the bike inside the car,so i can leave it for stops meals etc....

I'm definately of the second hand school of thought, bikes and cars!
Bike is thrown straight into the back of my Ford Escort (1.8 Ghia X ! <GRIN>) Hatchback with the seats down, thank God for leather seats as they sponge clean!
I made a towbar hitch for an old Renault 18 of mine which was basically a beam sticking out with two roofrack style wheel channel and frame clamp carriers bolted across it so that both bikes sat across the back of the car and didn't seem to impede the airflow too much. But didn't work well with square down tube and carbon frames.
I also have an Avenir Vermont boot rack that worked well on my Celica GT4 for the odd shaped frames that our bikes have!
I must remember to take a photo of it with 2 x Oz loaded!

Saab 9000 2.3 Turbo. Roomy (fit several bikes in the boot plus passengers, or can sleep in the back if necessary!), fast (200bhp), economic (45mpg on long run), cheap (£800!), reliable (mostly).
Like this one (but not this actual one):

Either our VW corrado G60 with a rack on the back (takes paint off every time!), my 1966 VW split screen camper or my girl friends 1964 VW split screen single cab pickup. Spoilt for choice but they all get used. VW thang is my other hobby.

Either my '98 Subaru Outback Sport, or my wife's '07 Rav4...I used to tote them around on top of my yellow Mazda Protege5 or my Subaru Legacy GT, but the arrival of our 2nd daughter and a german shepherd puppy (1 yr old and 80 lbs now!) meant that we needed more room.

Crappy Citroen ZX TD Estate. same underpinnings as the Pug 306 , torsion bars in the rear so good sized boot.
Converted to run on Veg oil with a twin tank system , fuel heater and changeover valve.
60mpg, fuel at 75p / ltr
Bike cost 3 x the cost of car.

I've got one of those new Subaru Impreza WRX's. Had a few of them before - great cars, very fast, AWD and can easily fit a bike in the back or on the roof, although I try to stay below 120mph when I have bikes on the roof.
I very rarely travel with bikes anymore because we've got excellent trails here in Stirling, Scotland right from the front door. I normallyonly use it to get to various european Singlespeed races.

I just laughed out loud at that!!!
actually, my very very successful IT Security company funds RDS that in turn funds the folks on here!!
We haven't made a profit at RDI Ltd (which became RDS when I moved to Scotland) since we started in 1997 !!! I don't really mind, because at the end of the day, it keeps me and some friends tinkering with new technology to make real products that sell out there.

the cool thing with the new impreza is that it has special bolt holes in the roof for a Thule roof rack so you can have a much more stable rack for bikes. I was going to do an article for Singletrack magazine many years ago on bike racks that involves taking various racks at high speed round a car track to see how stable they were. Never got anywhere...
