replacemet rear shock for k2 5000?
« on: September 29, 2007, 03:28:06 am »
Hi guys, I'm new around hear but have owned my k2 5000 for about 10 years. Beleive it or not I have hardley ridden it as the rear spring was too soft and hence the bike is in superb condition.

I've decided that it is about time it actually got some use so need to do a few things.

1. replace the rear shock, hopefully with an air shock with lock out - any suggestions?

2. get the rear disk conversion kit. Are rapid decent still trading as they don't reply to email?

3. sell the rear shock - it's a noleen smart shock, anyone know what it's worth?

Any help would be appreciated?

Welcome!

I think you do not have a strut bike, right?

You can get a stiffer spring at any LBS or Descent might be able to supply to you. Callum is probably on vacation.

If you read the old topics, I am a fan of Manitou Swinger air shocks. Depending on your ride height, may be able to find a compatible lenght on Flea-bay. If you find a shorter length as desired, an adapter block can take up the slack. I would recommend putting the block at the frame mount, as the frame width on the alum evos are more narrow than the carbon frames.

How about some photos? Always like to see some new members bikes.

I'll try and get some photo's tomorrow, the forks are now on my hardtail so I've replaced them with some marzochi's. If anyone wants some carbon noleens with a smart shock and is prepared to make a decent offer I might be prepared to sell them.

I've got my eye on a couple of shocks on fleabay right now. I guess I need a minimum shock length of 215 as thats what it's at now? If I got a 200mm length shock what would be the effect? I'm guessing the head angle becomes shallower and the bike becomes more stable?

I think that's what my mate has on his 5000. Had to do a bit of filing to get it to fit, but it works a treat.

I'm using an xfusion o2r shock on my 4000,it's 200mm long and fitted with no mods needed. No lockout on this one but I'm well pleased with it.Haven't noticed any difference at all in the handling of the bike with the new shock being slightly smaller. How much do you want for the forks?

Thanks I'll check one out. Anyone tried the fox float R?

I've got no idea what the forks are worth, I know they where a fortune new, but hey, they're not new are they :-P Make me an offer.

I have Fox Float RLs on both the front and rear of my bike.  Actually my machinist that I used could copy the one I had him make and have everything out in the mail in probably a week.  I don't remember how long my shocks are, but they were shorter than stock noleens.  But it worked out as the way the adapter had to be made it made the shock too long.  However, the Fox's want 12-13mm of sag, the Noleen's were supposed to be set to 8mm in the back, so I had my adapter made so that it was 5mm longer than the noleen.  This meant that I could run 12-13mm of recommended sag for the shock, and still be at the right ride height so it didn't mess with the geometry of the bike.  I wrote a lot about it when I did it 2 years ago, so search for those posts.  I give all the measurements then.

BTW, I LOVE the shocks and the ride they give, and they are light too.  I hardly use the lock outs, but they are available.

Nice work.  I remember when I drilled into my first rear dropout...my heart stopped beating.  My nephew had to use the jumper cables and truck battery to get it started ;)

I know what you mean and it didn't stop their either, I've not used a tap since high school engineering class and I was always snapping them! Fortunately I've got a little more finess nowadays ;-)

ive got a 190mm xfusion o2r on my oz and its fine, had to remove a little bit of the bottom mount for the valve but nothing excessive.
