Seals on 955/855 Pivot
« on: March 08, 2007, 07:43:25 pm »
In a state of boredom, I have decided to give the 855 an overhaul and turn it into a SS. Its currently just sitting as a frame next to its big brother (the 955).

Question I have though, I pulled the pivot apart to clean it up and one of the rubber seals is pretty much rotted out.

Would using a standard O ring work here, or has someone used something else to do the job?? The rest of the parts in the pivot seem pretty good and there is no slop in the swingarm.

Any suggestions on replacing these??

Ive replaced the ones on my 756 with standard hardware shop O rings, not sure if thats the right thing to do, but it worked fine for me.

Thats all I wanted to hear. If you've had no problems, thats good enough for me.

Until someone comes along and tells me I am doing the wrong thing.

Hi,
You're probably not doing the wrong thing and it's probably the cheapest option as well if you only need the O-Rings.
But for info; The maintenence kit for these bikes is RK002 available from Iron Horse at $14.95 each plus postage and any import duty/taxes/fees etc into your country.

For info:
Quote from the Instructions...
This kit fits:
1995 Models: 955, 855, 755, 755WC, Animal
1996 Models: 856, 756, Animal, Beast
1997 Models: 657, Beast GDT

This Kit includes:
Qty Part#     Description
4    13643    Bearing, Flanged (Lower Strut)
2    14472    Bearing, Flanged (main pivot)
2    14473    O-Ring, outer
2    14601    O-Ring, inner (larger of the two)
2    15067-1  Lube 1/4 Oz.

The O-Rings look standard, measured at about 26mm x 2mm and 22mm x 1mm (1" and 7/8" ?) outside Diameter and thickness.

If the seals don't work for you then Mcmastercarr has the double seal or "x" type. I have bought them before and they work great.

Pulled it all apart today, cleaned up the pivots and put in new o-rings.

Swingarm feels great now. I'll keep an eye on the rings to see how they hold up, but they are easy enough to replace anyway.
