"Clanknoise" due to the rear shock
« on: October 24, 2006, 02:47:33 am »
Hello:
Hope that someone can tell me what should I do to eliminate a sound and feeeling on the frame.
I have a 856 with coil springs on the rear. When I first rebuild the ods rear shock, after the instalation, it start to make a noise and I feeel on the frame a "clanknoise". Now I´ve replaced my older shock to a new ods that colin sold me. I thought that with the new shock it will stop the noise and feeling. But no, the noise and feeling on the frame was back.I noticed that in the upper fixation of the shock, the frame was scratched, maybe due to the contact of the upper body of the shock with the frame, right above the seatpost.
Can anyone help me to eliminate this problem?
Is this due to the wrong installation of the shock?
Thanks...

Redliner,

What size 865 frame do you have. If it is a small, then the body can contact the bottom of the seat tube.

Or maybe the spring is hitting something.

Another thing to note,

if I remember correctly the upper shock bolts is an M6
but the hole through the shock eye sleeve is M8 or
around that size,
if the top shock bolt isn't tight enough the shock and
sleeve can move up and down within the gap left between the sleeve and bolt, this can give odd creaking noises and knocking depending how easy
the shock can slip between the mounting plates,

try loosening the bolt right off, lean on the bike compressing the shock and at the same time tighten the bolt as tight as you dare without stripping the thread, use a standard length hex key without any extensions to help ensure you don't over tighten,

anyway my 2 pennith hope its of some help.

Hello:
My frame size is 18´´ and the spring is not hiting anything.
I´ve tried dismount and mount again all the parts on the rear suspension, but the feeeling still goes on.
I´ve tried different tensions on the spring(tighten and loosen) but didin´t do much effect. I´ve tried also the simon option, but the feeling still goes on
I´ll trie more experiences and than I will posted the results here.
Thanks for all, and excuse my bad technical english.

You may need to change the ods damper to  a thicker grade fluid
something around 30wt+,

the ODS came overdamped for elastomer springs
and most of us replaces the fluid to a much lower wt,

however I found when using coil springs on an ODS
unit that I needed to go back to a much higher
viscosity oil as the rebound was way to harsh,

just something else for you to think about.

Hi Zé DIogo !
Got your message that you'd installed the ODS.

(for other peoples benefit this was a brand new, never used ODS unit that I had bought as a spare and sold to Zé DIogo.)

I can't imagine that you have installed this incorrectly on the 856. You just need to make sure the bolt from the strut into the bottom of the ODS is done up nice and tight as this can come loose and "clonk".
And I'm assuming that you have the Split Collet piece between the strut and the shock?

I'm wondering if you have the Spacer tube and Seal spacers from the old shock fitted?
You should have a tube that goes through the ODS top mount that makes the M6 top mount bolt fit snugly into the shock. The Seal spacers sit on either side of this tube and make the shock a snug fit into the bike frame.

If these pieces are missing then you will get uncontrolled sideways movement in the shock which could have resulted in the early failure of your original shock and will kill this new one very quickly as well!

I think maybe you need to send me a picture of the installation?

Also I will try to email you the "Strut Assembly" diagram for this type of bike.

Keep me posted.

All of my rear shocks have had similar issues. My clunking has always come from a gap between the bolt and the shock mount. My solution is to wrap the bolt in as much teflon tape (like plumbers use) as I can squeeze into the shock mounts (leaving the threads clear on the end of course). Seems to have solved my problem every time.

Good luck!
