Need some help, I took the Girvin fork off my 756 and measured the steer tube at 1" . I have been told that a repalcement fork should have a 1 1/8" tube. Which do I really need?

The 1" Girvin fork should have a collar and shim that increases its diameter to 1" 1/8. I think the standard width is 1" 1/8th for any replacement fork.

that's right. I just replaced my fork on my 856. You can re-use the 1 1/8 headset but you will need a new crown race. available from your lbc for under$5.
