Wondering how many would be interested
« on: November 28, 2005, 04:08:15 am »
Its been something I've been considering for a while,
would anybody and if so how many would be interested in buying a carbon (Oz/4500/5500) swingarm with a sealed bearing conversion kit on an exchange basis???
you see I have a brand new s/arm already reamed out for bearings which got me thinking I could sell this with
a through shaft and necessary shims, buyer gets there own bearings and Ti bolts(if US based) this would make it more economical for the purchaser,I would receive the purchasers old s/arm to convert for the next interested party, obviously there would have to be an element of trust that the s/arms I receive are in perfect condition as I would then have to stop,
anyway just wondered how many may be interested
to see if this would be worth while.
Simon.
Ps thinking of asking around £40/£50 plus P&P leaves me
a little money over, also only open to members of this site.

I would be interested, but with a different goal.
I am anticipating a carbon swingarm from Wankel for my 957. Could you do a conversion on it? Is it the same?

I could send you my Oz swingarm too, but is has a broken cable router. It would not be a direct swap.

Hmmm I can look into that Terry I have done a conversion on my 856,
as for the Oz you can see the problem, would someone want to exchange a perfect s/arm for one with a broken guide  ???
Bit of a cheek this  :-[ but Will's coming over soon and we are hooking up so
if you got it to him to bring  over the Oz s/arm I could get it sorted before he returned, need to know its coming over before he gets here to enable me to get a through shaft and shims machined up.

Cool Will,

Let me know when you are going.

I would have 2 swingarms, the Oz and the 957.

OK Simon, come on Luvvvy! sell it to me!
(Blimey! you wouldn't cut it on "Dragon's Den" would you....!
<GRIN>
Seriously though, what does a "sealed bearing conversion kit" do?

What does it replace and is it better than just doing a pivot service..... (and cheaper or longer term?)

Why didn't K2 do this originally.......?

I guess you could do them on 4000's and 5000's as well then couldn't you? (same swingarm?)

What'd be the turnaround time and cost of doing my actual swingarm and returning it to me ? (in the UK)

International K2 ride this December somewhere near you then?
("Hands over the water" and all that....?)

Cheers
Col.

Hi Colin,
basically the sealed conversion removes the old pivot
bush system and converts it to stictionless sealed precsion bearings (4 of),less maintainance and if/when
they wear out you just replace them, the s/arm pivots do require reaming out to enable this conversion,
if you sent me your s/arm and I had the parts already
made then turnaround would be a day plus postage time.last one I did cost £5.00 for each bearing (sure they could be found cheaper) £10.00/£15.00 for the through shaft depending on which engineer shop I use, plus cost of shims (can't use washers)and bolts (can't remember cost of these, must check that out).
here's a pic of the parts and a s/arm being reamed.

Simon
Ps K2 probably didn't do this due to cost, not sure though,
yes it will work on 4000/5000 except the later evo models that came with a needle roller bearing in the frame (s/arm's still the same though),
yep international Proflex/K2 ride hopefully will happen,

Hi K2perv
sent PM to Terry regarding you sending it over via Will
which is no problem to me,if this doesn't workout we
can sort out pic's of your s/arm and either arrange an
exchange with my spare if your in a hurry,or send yours and I'll mod that one,I'll workout postage first if
you intend to take that route just incase it works out
uneconomical.
Simon.
P.S not sure on full costs but for the s/arm mod, through shaft plus shims I think about £40 sterling (think thats about $65 U.S ) exchange rate is not in your favour I'm afraid, plus postage, don't forget you need to supply your own bearings and bolts (though I can supply these they are not cheap),I'm positive they can be sorced much cheaper your side of the pond.

Any chance you could just send me the measurements so I could have my local machinist do it?  But most importantly is there a weight penalty by doing this?
Thanks,
Rich

Hi Rich,

I have pondered the question of doing the mods myself. Simon has that nifty line borer. Without it your swingarm would have to be jigged on a verticle mill and bored out. The setup and toolling for this I figure would cost me about $200. Then labor another $100. Not including material, I am at $300 already.

Your side of the country you could get cheaper rates, and factoring shipping costs involved, you could do it comparably in cost. I am just hammered for time and could use an expert to complete the job.

Hi Rich,
Terrys correct here on costing unless you have access to someone who has the required tools
and would do the job as a favour,
however don't be put off if you want to get the job
done youself then no problem,
there is a through shaft CAD drawing in the files section,
in my gallery is a pic of all the components and parts numbers of the bearings,
only slight alterations I've made, you need 4 shims
21mmX12mmX2mm,instead of the 6 shown,
on the CAD drawing make the thread length 25mm
instead of the shown 20mm.
good luck
Simon.
P.S there is a very very slight weight increase I beleive, so small I didn't bother to weigh it.

Getting there  ;)
for the weight weenies 1 shaft is far lighter the the standard M8 through bolt.
