Fenders/Mudguards
« on: November 09, 2005, 08:46:59 am »
Just wondering if you guys had any ideas for fenders (mudguards) for a world cup frame ('98 2000 w/ Cross Llink EXP + alum. SW)? I will be riding through the winter and will definitely need something. Main concern is coverage, easy of installation, and price (in that order). Weight is not a factor.

There seems to be plenty of options for plastic clipons but knowing that these frames are a bit unique I was wondering which would work the best?

Also, what website should I order from since my LBS has limited selection?

Thanks

Fio

Take a look at www.nashbar.com.

They carry Zefal fenders at about $15.

Fio, your best bet might be to have a good snoop through the galleries here. I remember seeing some guys using different front fenders, but I can't remember what fork they had.

To help you keep things easy;

Front fender - get the type the that attaches to the downtube. Clip on, bolt on, wrap around - whatever. Don't waste time trying to see if something might fit with your fork. Cut through the chase and get a downtube-type.

Rear fender - pretty simple here, really. Get one that clips onto the seatpost.

Done. Check with your LBS to see what they have and don't be afraid to shop around.

Unless you want to keep mud off of your legs. Downtube fenders only work to keep mud off of your face and sort of your torso. If you're riding trails or anything with lots of turns, the mud sprays out the side every time you turn the front wheel.

That said, I've had good luck with a Zefal fork fender. Only problem is, I switched forks, and I haven't been able to get the stupid mounting bracket (it's a quick release design) out of the old fork! Guess maybe I'll have to take the star nut out to push it through...

They work well for your back, but be warned that they won't keep crap off of your shock. Also, they're not perfect at keeping mud off of the back of your legs (not all mud flies straight up the center). Mine has served me pretty well though. I think I paid $4 at Nashbar for it. It's also a quick-release design (sort of - at least I don't have to use tools).

i reckon something to keep the crap of the shock and crosslink pivots, and somthing which keeps the crap away from the rear shock is a MUST  if riding regularly in wet offroad conditions

Can y'all tell i've never bought fenders before and don't ride in 'less than optimum' conditions? :-[

Sorry Fio! You've got way better advice here than mine to follow. ;)
