"Suppliers Charged With Violating California Proposition 65

NOVEMBER 04, 2005 -- MONTGOMERYVILLE, PA (BRAIN)—Fourteen bicycle suppliers have been charged with violating Proposition 65 under the California Health and Safety Code. The Bicycle Products Suppliers Association has scheduled a conference call on Monday to discuss how to address the issue and assign a task force.

An attorney with the Klamath Environmental Law Center, representing the Mateel Environmental Justice Foundation, sent a letter last month informing some companies that the outer casing on brake and derailleur cables as well as some plastic handlebar grips they produce contain lead and lead compounds.

Under Proposition 65, businesses are required to warn consumers about exposure to hazardous materials that can cause cancer, birth defects and reproductive harm—such as lead.

The companies named in the violation notice are Bell Sports, Cycleurope USA, Cannondale, G. Joannou Cycle, Dynacraft, Electra, Fuji, K2, Pacific Cycle, Raleigh America, REI, Scott USA, Specialized and Trek.

The notice claims consumers are exposed to lead via the skin, mucous membranes, cuts and abrasions. It also claims that these companies have not provided clear and reasonable warnings of lead exposure.

According to the letter, the violations have occurred since Oct. 17, 2002, and apply to occupational, consumer and environmental exposures within the state of California.

California law states that businesses found to be in violation are subject to civil penalties of up to $2,500 per day for each violation.  "

Boy, when it rains, it pours this month ;).

Well let's hope that all those companies group together to fight this.

So let's ask everyone out of cars and on bikes, but let's sue the bike makers so we can fund the advertising to promote bikes. Hey, there's that perpetual motion thingy!

Lead? LEAD?! You gotta be joking, right?

Oh wait, let me guess, the gov't was getting desperate, so they came up with this because someone used a lead pencil to knock off 10% from the price for a sale, right?

Or maybe the Pres missed that sale and decided to get tough and show his might! ::)

Nice find, Chad! Keen eyes, young man!!!!!

Perpetual motion thingy?  [smiley=laughing.gif] Terry, you NEVER cease to slay me with your witt! ;) :) That was another good one!

Nice, I've always had a soft spot for those 1 Gens :). My '88 Anniversary (2nd gen)  that I used to race has a bridgeported 2 rotor (93 housings and rotors) which I run 1.55 bars of boost - which puts 546HP (last dyno run I recorded) to the rear wheels - on 93 oct. pump gas.   Anymore though, it just sits in the garage next to my '68 SS Chevelle that I need to restore. Both cars cost too much fuel for me to drive daily (or that every time I get behind the wheel - I can't seem to keep my foot out of the throttle) :). ;D
