Longer travel K2/Proflex 5000/Disco Monkeys

Hey,

For you guys riding aluminum 5000s (not sure what the model is but it's the 5" the single pivot aluminum bike) and upgraded to 7" travel, what size shock did you use?

What was the original size shock?
What's your BB height now?

I used to ride a Proflex 854 and then a 98 Beast. Since then, I've been heavily into DH so I went away from trail bikes. Although with where I live now (Victoria BC), DH is almost non-existent so I figure I can buy a cheap frame and use parts from my hardtail and make a nice 'all-mountain' bike.

My plan would be to use a 5th rear shock and a 5" or 6" single crown fork.

Thanks a lot!

Well the 5000 travel is the standard 4.7 inches of travel with the Noleen shock. I recall the Disco Monkey had 5.5 inches of rear travel in stock form. How it got the extra travel I can't say, but I would guess the frame was tweaked somehow. The D-M is supposed to have a beefed up frame too.

Anyway, put an 8.5 i2i x 2.5 stroke 5th element on the Disco Monkey and it would give you the 7 inches travel you stated. SWEET!!!!!

Good luck,

Don't know much about the geometry or travel on my 5000 (AL frame, carbon swingarm), but I have a Stratos Helix 8.0 i2i x 2.4 with an adaptation to keep the swingarm in the original position in spite of the shorter i2i.  With average tread tires, I measure 11.125" ground clearance at the BB.

Good clearanc, but not enough to keep me from tearing my pedal apart on a rock while riding with Terry.
5K Large with Monkey Lite, Deore RapidFires, LX Crankset, XT r. Der., LX f. Der., Avid brakes, Stratos Helix Exp., Mavic rims, SRAM 990 cass. & chain.  29 lbs. on bathroom scale!

Actually, the 5000 only came with the SmartShock, which had a rear travel of 4.0 inches. The longer travel EVO's came later (starting in 2000 models I believe) when the NR2 became standard equipment on all models (like the Discos).
