Whoo I cracked a brake disc
« on: August 14, 2005, 07:28:22 am »
Whoooo just checked over my bike after our trip out to the Afan forest and having a local ride out with Sprucey (thanks for that Mark it helped keep my mind off recent events),
and look what I noticed,a cracked front brake disc :(,
not a surface crack either its completly seperated  :o,
I'll be contacting you Mark regarding purchasing one of those Aztec wavy Rotor's  8)
anyone think I should look into a warranty claim,
the disc/rotor has never run out of true or ever required straightening or received any noticable ding,
suprising position to find a crack  ???
Simon.

hmmmm, maybe I'll be sticking to my low tech canti's for a while yet!

I'd take a shot at a warranty claim, if you had the same problem on a motorbike it would be a MAJOR safety issue and the manufacturing company should at least know about it.
Good luck [smiley=beer.gif]

that is an odd place for a crack....seems to me.

even if it was blunt force, it's an odd place....

i'd try a warranty, can't hurt.

glad you and Sprucey have hooked up to ride. [smiley=laughing.gif]

Ok I've got my new Aztec rotor,
thanks to Sprucey next day delivery as well  8)
firstly though they claim to be lighter (upto 35%)
its not infact its sligthly heavier, but the Formula's are extremly light, actually I'm reasurred by this,
anyway it looks so  8)
also took some measurements,
the thickness of the Formula's rotor measured at an unworn point is .0715 in (1.81mm) the Aztec rotor
measures .0825 in (2.10mm).
Also the importers Windwave are looking into a warranty claim (even though its way past its warranty date,by years) as they say its so unusual.
Simon.
Trying it out tomorrow :P

Hi Simon,

It looks like a very logical place to crack. This spoke is shorter than the one next to it. And has less mass to flex or expand or absorb shock. As heat travels from the extremety, this short spoke absorbed and retained more heat than the long one. Thus being exposed to more extreme heat cycles and taking the lion's share of the burden, it naturally fatigued out.

Meye tew scents. Da knew won lukes nyphtie!

Don't forget that sharp radii have more stress concentrations than rounded ones.  Probably started at the sharp(er) point to the left of the arrow and travelled right....

Hopefully I'll know soon as the rotor has been sent to the importers tech department,
another interesting thing the thinner Formula disc has a recommended wear rate down to 1.61mm,the thicker Aztec rotor has a wear rate down to 1.5mm,
anyway tried it today and it bedded in pretty quickly, performed excellent, just seemed to have slightly more power over the standard rotor,no issues to worry about at the moment,
On another note really fancy some Hope mono M4's especially after trying some on the Marin test ride I had, shame I can't afford them  :P

Pleasantly suprised 2 days after posting my cracked rotor to Windwave (the formula importers to the UK)
I received a new rotor as a warranty replacement ;D,
although I'm unhappy it cracked in the first place  :'(I'm very pleased with the responce from Windwave as the rotor was well passed it normal warranty [smiley=beer.gif].

we had an email from someone who broke a b4 rotor... they didn't noticed the crack getting bigger and bigger.  I think i'll go and check all mine - i have to say WindWave (Formula UK) have always been great at looking after their customers.
