Bike components question?

What are some good bike components?  I am looking to swap out my aging Shimano Deore XT stuff with something a bit lighter.  

The guy in my LBS reffered to my bike as an "antique", little does he know...

I'm a big fan of SRAM groupsets.  I think they are much better quality, better looking and cheaper than shimano.  If you look very carefully, you can get custom print on the surface of the higher end sets.  

The ESP 1:1 actuation ratio stuff is good and works well with the tangled gear cable path.

since Precision Billet is no longer in business, I would second Callum's recommendation of using SRAM components. They are now (again) making front derailleur's so you can do a full SRAM drivetrain.

I'd go with a XTR front mech, they are just too good, rear mech same again although the SRAM is very good too, I did used to run an ULTEGRA mech on my old GIANT and that worked very well.

your LBS will   you for getting new stuff rather than buying a new bike from him.

I think shimano is good stuff, the newer XT stuff is real good, if your LBS is calling your bike an antique, then the XT stuff you may have on it is too! there is a huge difference in quality and function between an XT part of ~'97 and an XT part of today.

What is an ODS spring kit?  I have no idea what ODS is


The bike has a rockshox fork on there now that looks to have about ~3" or so of travel.  Though it feels really soft, maybe to soft like there is oil or air or whatever is suposed to dampen it cause it seems to bottom out rather easily... and it makes a clunking noise

You'll want XTR if you want to stick with Shimano. The weight savings isn't going to be as great with "just" XT pieces. Your wallet WILL, however.

I don't know anything about SRAM, sadly. Although, it does provide a great alternative for those who don't want to "deal with" shimano anymore.

Funny - for the past 1+ month on E-Bay I haven't seen a single piece of XTR go un-sold. And it's still expensive. [smiley=turtle.gif]

My bike is made of SRAM, Paul, Race Face, Easton, and Rolf.  And I am trying to get an XTR FD  [smiley=disbelief.gif].  But you don't have to go that route.

"ODS" is the old Girvin shock before Noleen. When the Pogo stick shock was improved with hydraulics, the called it the "Oil Dampening System". I had one of them as a spare for my Beast for a while and had to use it when the NR1 failed. It actually worked pretty good.
