On E-Bay - what is this? K2????
« on: April 08, 2005, 06:36:35 pm »
Wondering if someone can identify this frame and whether or not it's legit.

Link.

He says it's like a Disco Monkey. Okay, well, that doesn't tell me exactly what it is. I've never seen anything by way of picture that resembles this - especially with the square downtube. Not from K2/ProFlex anyways (but I don't know squat  [smiley=laughing.gif] ).

Good? No good? Looks like it's better as a DH bike, more than anything else.

Anyone?

Oh, nevermind! I'm stupid. It's an Evo/5000.

Damn, I might just have to bid on this. I don't know why, but...... ohhhhhhh. Why couldn't my 3000's swingarm be like that? I know, I know... because it's not a 5000, hardy har!

Damn, doesn't look too bad either.

What'd'ya think guys?

yea, it's got to be a '98 5000. it was yellow and came with the smart shock nr-4. but it doesn't have 5 inches of travel. 4 inches is the max on that shock. you can get more with a different shock.
also, the disco monkey didn't have a carbon swingarm.
the only problem is the lack of disc mount. but if you want to make your own or order a hammerhead from rdi, then if the price is right, go for it.

Cool. Thanks for the confirmation guys.

So then, is it fair to say that the only difference between the Evo and the 5000 is the swingarm material? Perhaps it's another case where this coupled with build quality made the difference with model name/number? I tried searching, but didn't come up with much. Just looking for familiarity and education within the brand. The K2 pdf's only help so much.

PATIA!

As far as I'm aware the 5000's 4000's and evo's etc are all the same (except the early one's had a square profile down tube but otherwise the same),only difference between the models is the spec,
there is another exception, the very base model Evo's eg the 900,these's had an aluminium swinging arm instead of the carbon one (same as the one I've converted to fit my carbon frame),I prefer this arm as its latterally stiffer (same weight as well),just my personal preference.

One other difference:
The '98 series bikes (like that 5000 - I've got two of them) have bushings in the main suspension pivot, whereas the '99+ bikes (i.e. the EVO) have bearings in the pivot. Not sure if it makes a functional difference as both seem to be pretty reliable, but just so you know.

Love my 5000's...

Thanks for the info, Matno! Appreciated muchly!

I actually took my 3000 out, pulled the shocks and took some measurements yesterday. I'm really shocked (pun not intended) at how rigid that rear swingarm is when there's no shock holding things together.Bearings, bushings - whatever - it friggin' works!  :o

Since i'm typing....

I found that if I were to max out the rear Noleen's 1.5" (38 mm) shock stroke I get 4.5" (114 mm) of rear wheel travel. NICE!!!! Can't wait to get the 2" stroke in there.

The front isn't as "glorious". With the front Noleen maxed to it's 1.75" (45 mm) shock stroke I get 2.25" (57 mm) of front wheel travel. Where's the beef? [smiley=laughing.gif] Hopefully my tinkering will help to supply a little more there. Yup, 2" stroke up front, too. Should net about 2.75" (70mm). And the new shocks weight half what the Noleen's do (1 pound EACH!). Oh, I mean 1/14 stone.  ;D

I'll make my own long travel linkage fork before I put a telescopic on.

I'm winning on the 5000. Maybe i'll do a long travel linkage fork for it. Hmmmmmm (grabs tape measure, pencil and paper). Anyone tried this before??????? Kinda neat to have a 5" travel linkage fork, no?  :P

Okay, i'll shut up now. Gonna RIDE my bike.  ;)
