ODS shock?
« on: March 23, 2004, 09:38:09 pm »
I have a set of Girvin Vector forks with the elastomers, (a picture of them is on my gallery - (Junkster)). I am a little confused as I am not too sure if they have a Girvin ODS shock or whether this is an earlier model of shock. I am probably gonna get be a coil sprung shock for it at some stage. However, may try to rejuvinate this one. I have a 1996 FAQ on how to improve the Girvin ODS shock but I am not sure if this is one, (with oil dampening). Any ideas?

No, I think this is an older unit, probably 855 or even older!

I don't think that it is an ODS unit or any sort of damping.

I have an XP-X and the ODS units are gold in colour and clearly say "ODS"

The elastomers on your unit do the damping, if you replace them with springs, you'll have a pogo stick! <grin>

Hi Dan.  Your vector fork has the friction shock and not the ODS unit.  If you replaced the MCU's with a spring, you would be bounced all over the place.

ODS units and Noleen shocks for vector forks do show up on ebay once in a while.  I bought a used ODS shock for my vector2 fork last year. I think I paid about $14 USD. The MCU's were hard on the one I bought.  I have seen new ODS units with new MCU's go for about $30 USD.  I ended up buying a crabon crosslink and switching out the vector2... but I miss the silver, red, silver look.   ;)

Versus this

Maybe I will have some aluminum crosslink legs annodized clear....

Hi Kiwi.  According to This guy's website (Will is his name), you can swap the parts for certain models.

Have a look

The 97 cross-link has different bolt holes and would clearly not give the correct travel path "J" if used in conjunction with the Vector.

dang i have 97 girvin carbon.........

Hi,

You also had to replace the bottom spring cap?
I also want to replace the mcu unit. On ebay I have purchased the ods unit with hardened mcu's. I want to replace these with a spring but think the bottom cap wil not survive.

Can you tell me where to purchase tis bootom cap?

thnx in advance,
Frank
