Bringing my 97 Animal into the current century...I installed disc brakes! It took quite a bit of fabrication, but I finally have a functional rear disc mount; the bracket is currently 90 grams, but after I do some skeletonizing and shaping, I expect it to be no more than 65. Let me know if you want details and I can take some measurements and different pictures.

Mount is down to 50 grams and hasn't lost any strength. Tested on some rough trails, no issues.

After 20 years of riding my '97 Animal, I decided to modernize. At the time I posted this, the bike weighs in at 23.2 lbs. There is very little original equipment remaining. This bike is extremely light, almost too light, but very practical. Fast on the road and on trails, and I don't feel like I need to buy any newer frame to keep up with others. Pro-Flex standing the test of time! If anyone is interested in my sources or why I chose these particular items just let me know. Most of them were a balance of light weight and practicality.

Current component/mod list:

-'97 Animal Frame with carbon swingarm (brake bosses drilled and removed, not exactly sure on weight; guessing about 2680 g)
-Original Shifter Cable housing (~70 g)
-Aheadset w/ti bolt & Bontrager carbon cap (94 g)
-Aluminum Seatpost Clamp (28 g)
-Fox Evolution fork (1706 g)
-DNM AOY-36RC air shock w/lockout (had to fabricate attachment to seat stays) (307 g)
-160mm front/rear Deckas brake rotors (85 g each)
-iPower 2-piston Hydraulic brake levers/lines/calipers (had to fabricate rear mount 50 g) (417 g for the set)
-RockBros carbon/CroMo saddle (207 g)

Planned projects:

-Remove extra material beneath seat tube (near shock)
-Remove rear water bottle lugs
-Grind on fabricated shock mount to remove non-structural material
-Powder coat (black) shock triangle and rear caliper mount
-Jagwire (or similar) shifter housing
-Cork tape grip replacement
-Ceramic derailleur pulleys
-Various Ti bolts at all shock pivots, crank arms, stem and brake mounts
-Titanium seatpost (due to scary stories of broken carbon posts, and reduced weight)

It's been a long time in the making and it's not 100% finished yet (brakes need bleeding, chain needs a couple of links added as you can see from the pictures and the bottle cage needs to be moved to the correct place).

It was born as a 2002 K2 Bumpy Monkey. I got the frame for a good price and had it powder coated, added a complete XT 10 speed group on it (originally a 3x then decided to go with a Race Face 1x and OneUp Components full setup).

Not yet, as soon as I bleed the brakes and remove the left shifter I'll weight it and report back. Rims and tires are not exactly lightweight though.

Just wondered. If I was really concerned about weight I would have to shed a good bit before I lightened anything on the bike.

I am with you, hopefully the bike is going to allow me to shed some weight soon!

Not really concerned about the bike weight, I can't honestly think of anything that could be further shed on iy, other than replacing alloy with carbon anywhere possible and going tubeless.

Actually no modifications to the frame/swingarm. Frame and swingarm have been powder coated with a matte green and black respectively. The frame paint was in very good shape but I just could not bear the paint scheme. I wish the Marzocchi fork was matte too. And lighter, it's kind of a pig but it came kind of cheap, so...

by the way one added the two missing chain links and removed the left shifter the bike weights in at 25.5 pounds. Other then use all carbon parts I don't thing there's any way of (of point to ) getting it any lighter..

So no fouling by the shock on the lower mount or anywhere else through the swingarms full travel?
If so, I think that's a first for an air shock, isn't it?
Which model of Fox shock is it?
