Xtr Cranks
« on: September 18, 2007, 10:11:32 am »
I have been using the newer shiny xtr cranks and have developed the creaking syndrome.  Has anyone had any luck quieting these puppies?  The bearings are good.  I have wrapped them with pipe tape and they still creak --especially the left arm.  This is on my Oz and I am hoping that it isn't the bottom bracket insert getting loose.  Suggestions?

Hi... are you talking about the M970's?  How do you like them?

Ok... back to your problem... when does the creaking start?

Have you checked your pedals?  Could be the BB cups... the threads are really fine, if you dont grease them enough they will creak.  Also check the chainring bolts.  Any titanium/aluminium contact on your cranks? When those two metals meet they usually creak.

It could also not be the crankset and something else entirely... noise travels on these frames!

Mine are the M960's.  The are stiff and light and shift like butter.  They just creak.  I have lubed all of the moving parts and close contacts in the lower frame and they still creak under high torque.   I haven't checked the chainring bolts or the eggbeater pedals yet.  They are next on the list.  Noise does travel an carbon frames.  This one has been a good one I hope it is just an attatchment and not something bad starting up.

I've got a set of the M970's... going onto a light ht race build, reviews are all pretty good but never hurts to double check.

Eggbeaters.... my money would be on them as the culprit! I have the 4ti's... get real noisy if they aren't kept well greased.
