Common
questions are "I've got a shock that needs servicing, what do I
do?" and "how do I go about getting some (small parts) for my k2
bike?"
Here's some
basics - k2 warrantees frames for 5 years provided you registered
your purchase
with the company and/or still have your paperwork from the purchase and
haven't made any modifications to the frame (drilling holes and things.)
If the frame is verifiable as being within
the 5 year manufacturing date, you can make a case for warrantee. K2
warrantees shocks for 1 year. The cost of a rebuild for a shock out of
warrantee is about $75.00 USD. Many shocks are no longer available as a
rebuild such as the smart shocks, this is according to K2 and several guys
who have sent them in. They will send you a newer shock, usually a c-99
nr-2 as a replacement, either front or rear. These newer shocks have
improved seals, screw in as opposed to snap in seal covers and in the case
of the rear shock, can give you additional travel. k2 considers this
an upgrade. (Despite losing a rebound adjustment going from a smart shock
to an NR-2 ...ed)
To obtain small parts or warrantee work, it
is best to contact a local k2 dealer and work with them directly. You can
go to the dealer locator at the k2 site and look up a dealer in an area
near you. If there is no local dealer, k2 will work with a local bike shop
on a case by case basis. Have your bike shop contact the k2 customer
service department and explain the problem - this process takes a bit
longer than going thru a k2 dealer. Before you go about trying to
get small parts or rebuild kits, go to the k2 site - http://www.k2bikes.com/tech.htm
- or the info the k2 tech forum 2 site has on Daves site - http://idriders.com/proflex/tech.shtml
. you can look up your particular bike and get the part numbers you need -
refer to the owners manuals for seal and complete rebuild kits for the
parts numbers. I recently sent in an nr-4 for warrantee work thru
REI. they were fast, prompt and courteous. I specifically requested a
rebuild and not a replacement. The rebuild was back in my hands in six
working days. I have heard other stories of much longer times to get
things done but it seems to be more of a hangup from the bike shops end
and not k2's. (Ya, like me! It took my LBS over 6 weeks to get
a replacement NR-2 to me ...ed)
Any other comments here from the gang would
be appreciated. - OP
