Title: Rear Mech hanger for Proflex XPX
Post by: mazdaman1980 on January 08, 2009, 01:26:26 am
Hi Guys

I have just joined so a big hello to you all.  I am the very proud owner of quite a few bikes but in particular a Proflex XPX and 853. The XPX i picked up about a month ago and have been buying up nice parts for but the rear mech hanger seems to be an issue. I always thought that the XPX is the world cup version of the 856 so the hanger would be the same with the two grub screws horizontal to each other to suit a BETD type 56 but it turns out i was wrong. My two grub screw holes are vertical to each other and i have gone through countless pictures online and cant find another the same and the XPX pics on here are not close enough to help.

Has anyone got any experience of this and if so can you please help me and point me in the right direction?

Adam

Welcome!

That is odd that the holes are verticle. I have had an 856, and the holes were horizontal. Could be an earlier design, or same hanger as a Razorback?

Could use a pic.

There are some other XPS owners on here, and maybe they can chime in.

Hi,
I've owned my XP-X from new and I have a spare 856 rear swing arm to compare it with, they're identical as regards the rear hanger.
The XP-X is a UK special edition of the 856, so they're all "World Cup" design bikes, (there were also XP-6 and XP-8 Versions)
Apart from some little differences that I won't go into here, they are fundamentally identical.
So, onto the derailleur hanger.........

From your description I think you may have the wrong hanger, the BETD56 is definitely wrong for your bike , they list it as suitable for '97 bikes but that's debatable.....Ours is a '96 design bike even though it was sold in '97 in the UK.

The 856/XP-X takes a 14492 hanger that has a big hole in it and a small hole or Pin, plus the threaded hole for the derailleur mech.
It fixes to the matching holes on the swing arm, using a two part bolt, that consists of a recessed Hex Screw and a threaded retainer. These two parts are basically a Chain Ring Bolt set, if yours is missing.

The upper of the two "grub" screw holes that you're seeing is a threaded bolt hole for a mudguard or carrier, there should be a matching one on the other dropout. The lower one is a thro' hole for the pin on the hanger.

Sounds like you have a RK011 (BETD 56) hanger which is the part for later non-Strut bikes, that has two horizontally spaced threaded holes in it that two recessed hex screws thread into from the frame?

The fundamental difference between the two is that the 856/XP-X hanger fixes to the outside of the drop out and the RK011 fixes to the inside of the drop out on the later bikes.

See the Dropout finder sheet for the right parts for all of the bikes:
http://idriders.com/proflex/files/dropout%20finder.pdf (http://idriders.com/proflex/files/dropout%20finder.pdf)
or this one:
http://www.k2bikes.com/PDF/techLibrary/derailleur.pdf (http://www.k2bikes.com/PDF/techLibrary/derailleur.pdf)

BETD don't list a hanger for the x55/x56/XP-x range, but their Hanger No 45 looks identical to a 59124 Hanger for the '98 HT300 which doesn't have the hole or pin and K2 say "*The hanger 14492 can also be used on the 98 HT 300" So I'd expect it to fit Vice versa:
http://www.mountainbikecomponents.co.uk/items.asp?CategoryID=198&Name=Jeep+Hanger%2FDropouts (http://www.mountainbikecomponents.co.uk/items.asp?CategoryID=198&Name=Jeep+Hanger%2FDropouts)
So you could take a gamble on that one?

or try these people in the US

Hope this helps, or ask more Q's..........

This is what i have and you can see the issue i have right away. I think in the BETD catalogue of mechs type 48 looks identical to the one you are showing me Colin, what do you think?

Thank you so much for your help, i really appreciate it

yes what you have in the picture is for a non strut bike, e.g. a 4000, 5500 or Oz etc. so no good for the XP-X

I agree, the BETD48 looks spot on!

Hello boys,

Long time no see.

I bought a 856 frameset off ebay to buildup but the mech hanger is missing, thanks to Colins tips and pictures I think I found something close to the rught obe, without the pin hole, Raleigh M800 looks like it might fit.
