Title: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: orange on October 23, 2008, 03:02:12 pm
Just starting this after a suggestion in another section. Let's see if it gets used. If it does it'll tend to be towards the top of the pile and may even be made a sticky, but let's see how it goes.

So, post here your pride and joy and tell us a bit about it ;)

Here's mine to start. My last remaining Proflex (I had 4 at one point and have owned 6 in total). It's an 855. Possibly, allegedly previously owned by one of the Grewal brothers, World Champion riders. Not sure on that though...

These images are from Cannock Chase (UK) last year at an event erstwhile member here Kneedowndean also attended on his Beast.

My 555- All original bits, bar the pedals and bar ends (never used the short Girvin ones, which now probably adorn Slim's 555- ain't gone far from the tree!)

Still had the yellow elastomers when I took this pic- was the search for new ones which originally led me here.

This is my 4000. I bought it new in January '98 when they first came out. I upgraded the forks and changed the shocks from NR5's to NR2 on the front and NR4 on the rear. Wheels, brakes, bars and saddle, etc followed in time. When I bought this bike I originally wanted a 857 so...

This is my 857. I bought off ebay last summer from a guy in Norwich CT, USA. It was advertised as 'Very good condition' but when it arrived it looked brand new. It has 'TEST RIDE'  on the frame under the laquer, which I hadn't noticed in the photo. When I enquired this is what the guy said:
Near where he lives there was a main Prolex dealer. When the factory shut down all remaining stock was bought by this shop. This bike was a factory test bike that was never used. He bought it from the shop but never used it also. How true I dont know, but I got a new 857 for £200. The chain had never been oiled and the rims have never been braked on.  Result!

Bought when new in 1996. Still have all the original paperwork and stuff.

Rear susp. change. I think I need a stiffer rear spring so not much seat time with it yet.

Another 4000.Bought the frame in 1998,and it's been cobbled together with an ever changing set of components ever since. The only bike I've kept for any length of time.
Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: DugB on October 26, 2008, 09:44:13 pm
Here's my 4000, purchased on eBay in excellent condition for $450. I've upgraded a number of the components. It's all XTR now, with Candy 4ti pedals, Magura HS33's and Thomson stuff. The Risse's arrive this Friday...after they're installed I'll weigh it.

The second image is the 856 I built up from a $50 Craigslist frame and fork, both of which seem to have very little wear. Thanks to a set of Callum's springs and some spare parts the unit is now my commuter bike/guest bike. My wife also has an 856, nearly brand new, that was had for $275 via Craigslist.

My Group:
Wife's 1999 K2 1000

My 2000 K2 EVO 3

My 1996 Proflex 856
(http://idriders.com/proflex/coppermine/albums/userpics/10013/normal_Proflex7.JPG)
None of these are orginal equipment. They were all frame only purchases and built with whatever was available as time went by. I can't seem to leave things alone and tend to change things up from year to year.

Well, here's what mine used to look like:

However, since then it has had the paint stripped off it (thought it was cracked). I have located a new pivot kit for it, as well as a load of spare bearings (thanks very much to the folks on this forum who helped me track em down!)

I'm going to rebuild it soon, but first it needs to be repainted, so i need your help to decide what colour to get it!

I had originally thought that bright orange would have been quite nice, but now im not so sure. Black or White are always safe bets, but i dont want it to be boring, nice bikes like the Evo deserve to look nice.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Cheers, Scott.

Hi chaps,
Heres my XPX still a bit muddy from todays ride, had it from new (well Mrs Tel did) And I`ve found it to be the perfect place to put all my biking toys on carbon seat post, selle SLR flame saddle, carbon bars and bar ends, carbon stem,(I`m a carbon tart) X-racelite wheels, tubeless tyres (as recomended by Grimjack) XTR peddles, rapid desent springs
(http://i128.photobucket.com/albums/p196/eltel5/PICT0016-3-1.jpg)
Oh did anyone else go for the house rabit(Twigglet) option? ;D

BTW i dig that 862!!! purple! ;)

this one is interesting, i think.....circa 1998 race proflex bike used in pro races  (strut with EVO frame) never made it into mainstream production

full XTR stuff....i added a carbon riser bar and a fat arse seat, risse genesis (OMG) it came with an Nr1 and Ti springs (shovelon ownes the Ti spring now)  srill run a steel spring and Nr on the front......size WAYBIG she is ridden on easy stuff but she is a dream come true....i may add disc but....

This looks and sounds like the bike Nora Rosche rode in the thread I started a while ago. Hers would have been a smaller size but looks exactly right. Even down to the NR1 with TI spring. Wonder how many of these were made?

i dont have a k2/proflex any more, i had to sell my oz frame to callum (rds) as i needed funds after my bank account was pilfered, now this is all i have apart from the roadie, im looking for a 957 frame or an 857 or even an xpx (i should never have sold mine) guess i feel like a bit of an intruder on here now but ill keep up to date with whats happening on the k2/proflex front and add my words of wisdom  :D when i can. anyway heres my current ride.

Hi Jeff, nice to hear from you mate, good luck on the XPX front too, if you can find 2 of them Mrs Tel would stop chewing my ear if I could get her 1 of them in medium flavour. She still has`nt bonded with her 857 after 2 1/2 years of riding it every week.
Cheers Tel.

Probably a bit on the hard side but will need wearing in, i managed about 25mm of travel with 18 stone jumping on it, but the lad was over the moon with it, originally it was for his missus but he's using it and she's using his rocky mountain the nutter!

Ok so it all started the 1st of november 2006 the very day I found the forum and joined. Its been two years of sourcing the best parts from allover the world ebay head aches and frustrations and I finally think I can rest knowing that my bike is complete the final pieces fitted on the 10th november 2008 so 2 years and 9 days later its done, the only question I have is do I ever ride it the way it should be ridden or do I just stand back in awe of the bike before me.

Well I have previously posted an image before but hopfully tommorow I'll have the completed bike images posted  :)

My 1996 856

Got it off ebay 375.00

Its believed to be all original, even the tires, and its like new - only one scratch under the top-tube you cant even see. Whoever the previous owner was hardly rode it and must have kept garaged. I've been told in this forum this might be a somewhat rare or special Proflex as of this bike wasnt originally spec'ed with an ODS and GDT shocks.

(someone should skicky this so we have an offical picture thread)

Bargain! it looks very clean
it's probably one of the last ones sold they did upgrades on the later ones, the shocks and springs are the same as those that came fitted to my 97 Beast GDT, that was an x56 model sold new in 97, my GDT shock only lasted 5 years though.

Thanks alot, very much appreciated...yeah, its VERY clean, you would be hard pressed to find a Proflex in this pristine condition...hell, even the chainrings show close to no wear. I'm wondering if it might have even been a floor demo (I did get it from a bikeshop selling it on ebay), its litterally in that good of shape.

Yep shes been broken in on the XC circuits round oxfordshire, rides great, really does pay to spend a little if ya can, the gear setup is sram x-o throughout bar theXT front mech and and FSA chainset really smooth shifting, The best move I made was adapting the 4way swinger to fit snug into place, now the back end is a perfect ride and very plush.

Havent weighed her in yet but i think it gonna be a respectable figure when i finally do.

There are very few thing that i might do,swaping out the smart shock up front for a genesis is a possibility its just a little soft upfront for me im  190lbs, not sure what the spring is on the front but the shock is brand new straight out the box but still seems to soft so a genisis might be the key also to shed those vital lbs get a Ti spring on the rear.

Oh and before anyone mentions it I have some SPDs to fit im finally gonna make the transition over to them in the new year!

These bikes really need to be reproduced!!!! as does the crosslink fork

One already has (Dominic made his own) from proper carbon not thermo plastic.
no one was interested in buying so he only made his own.

Simon.

Shame, really.
Just goes to prove that if it doesn't come from a big name brand, with tons of "you want this, NOW" marketing, it'll remain a niche market product.

I wonder what Callum's going to come up with? I've got to the stage when I find it virtually impossible to imagine a STIFF 5500.

My Oz(pre-Simonized).     Simon's sealed bearing conversion for the swingarm, coupled with the Swinger shock, took out the wobble or flex feeling for me.

My 955. This has a few vintage parts on the way. Hopefully I have it all before the end of the year.

My other Proflex 855 is in a sad state at the moment. Its soon to be kitted out with some fox floats, Truvativ Stylo Cranks, XT Hydro Discs and some other random bits.

what are those snakeskin tyres?
Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: dell on January 09, 2009, 11:18:49 am
The snake skin tyres were ment for my son's bike but he wanted 2.5s for his Foes down hill bike so they were going spare in the shed at the time.
The front forks are rock shox psylos stripped down and sprayed the same colour as the frame which is a metalic graphite grey ( sprayed in the garden hanging from the washing line),  i got the decals cut locally they are a carbon fibre vinyl they look the part but they don't show up too good in the photo, the gearing is all xt along with the brakes and shifters.
I have a few carbon items on the bike as i thought it matched the colour of the frame, seat post, bars, stem, bar ends and bottle cage the cables are also a sort of a carbon weave but again doesn't show up in the photos. the wheels are made by a company called xero they look good and i am happy with them, like you say its a bit different but i like them that way.

                         cheers dell............ ;D

Is your rear suspension a stock setup?  My first Proflex was a 754 and now that I think about it I don't know that I've ever seen a 954, but that setup looks a lot different from what I'd expect...

It is pretty much how my bike is currently, but I put on my Titec Pluto saddle back on.  It was in NOS condition with all original components but when the bike arrived, the package was open and missing a bunch of stuff, so I then proceeded to do some weight weenish replacements.

And It has some fresh scrapes and chips from xc/all mountain riding over here in Kelowna British Columbia, Canada.  I am also ditching the tires as well....  the stock tires suck in the dry here.

You  must love your K2 that much that it gets such a nice carbon Alien. 8)
Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: Akagi on May 20, 2009, 12:22:32 am
Yes, I am a bit of a weight weenies (although I do look at cost effectiveness), so a alien carbon fits well.  The stem, seat, seatpost, barends all fell out of the bike box so I had an excuse to upgrade ;D

The Alien Carbons are regularly going as low as 30 USD (mine included) used on US ebay, especially the ones with short lengths, which works great for us proflex owners 8)

Here's a photo a took tonight after my ride:  Stuff is much more dialed to my liking and fit.

My 2001 K2 Attack 4.0

Shimano LX drivetrain, X-fusion O2-RC shock, Rockshox Psylo fork.  The X-fusion shock has a longer stroke than the OE noleen sport adjust so the rear travel is about 5".  With the 120mm Psylo it rides great on the rocky stuff here in the northeast USA.  No problems keeping up with my buddies fancy Specialized FSRs...

My main ride nowadays is an Orange 5 - the sort of bike that K2/proflex should have become - single pivot, enduro machine.  it weighs about 28lbs or so and has a durable, well sort of,  XT setup all round.

pub, shopping and generally scooting round town.  Used to use when I lived in London for the daily commute through the city streets, capable - Sram 9 carbon and some really powerful (but totally useless because they rub all the time) Formula ORO disk brakes
(http://www.proflex.demon.co.uk/photos/855heads/97beast.jpg)

still being built up for the UK singlespeed champs - the push shock is totally knackered and I'm waiting for noleen J6 to send spare parts.  The race is 2 weeks today so I hope they arrive in time.  The bike weighs sub 25lbs, if the shock gets fixed, I'm thinking of adding some ultra pimpy Crank bros Cobalt wheels to this bike.  If the don't come in time, I have an Oz frame kicking around that I will use these parts on.

check out the ultra-pimpy paint job
(http://www.proflex.demon.co.uk/photos/855heads/blingss.jpg)

of course, one of my favourite bikes - the pub/plane/car/train friendly foldup brompton
(http://www.proflex.demon.co.uk/photos/855heads/brompton.jpg)

next bike to add to the collection?
+ a carbon proflex
+ a big travel Orange patriot or Proflex 798?

not sure...

So finally here is my finished pride and joy, the last parts added where the FSA carbon chain set and the magura brake setup, hope you all like as I do.

.....that looks mighty mighty.......like a cybernetic Mike Tyson!.......I dig the hydro rim brakes.....

Heh..........The elastomers on my 555 set rock solid............don't know if it's a feature of the British climate, as opposed to them melting, but at least yer bike is till rideable as a more or less hardtail.........seen some horrors of melted MCU's one here.

And the microwave softening method is crap too!

<-------------see my sig!

Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: orange on June 12, 2009, 11:16:46 pm
Yes I tried the microwave once - ended up with one half of the elastomer squidgy as jelly, the other half solid :D Then over the period of an hour it solidified into an amorphous lump of concrete.
Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: Aron in Toronto on June 13, 2009, 12:23:44 pm
My elastomers were rock solid also. I just tightened the dampers down and rode it as a ghetto hardtail as I was teaching my daughter to ride her bike. That only lasted about a week. One day while taking a rest on a little ride we left our bikes in the sun for maybe 30 min and when I was about to get back on the side of the elastomer facing the sun was like a melting marshmallow. On the short ride home it turned into a crumbling, gooey mess.

It was like a Proflex fondue.  ;D

Here's one I acquired this week, just back from a first ride on it.Heavier than my other bikes but rides well and so smooth and silent. No knocks squeaks or rattles and no play anywhere.A bit slower uphill, probably down to the chunktastically ott 2.3 downhill tyres, but descends very well. All in all pleased with it.

I think it reacts to input- on fairly small hits, it has less give, so it won't dive or boing, but with big hits, it soaks up the force............I'm sure some of the lads here have a better explanation..........from my experience, they actually did work, but weren't very durable............
As I said on retroBIKE, this looks like a very good nick bike (looks also like a catalogue special, but basically this is the bike the catalogue specials were aping!).
If its nice and tight, no wear, and works well, then use it and enjoy it...............okay it won't be a Santa Cruz Bullit, but it will perform 90% as well, for absolutely no moolah!!

I'm torn at the moment about riding my XP-X from Lands end to John O'Groats next year, I'm going to give London to Paris a go on it to see how I get on, but I am immediately jealous that I don't have such a nice bit of kit as this to do it on!

Thanks - The powdercoat was done by a guy called Dan at a company called PWS Finishing in Dagenham, Essex, England.  He's well known in the UK for doing excellent jobs on bikes, mainly BMXs.  If you are in the UK and want a powdercoat done at reasonable price you could do a lot worse than to check him out.

It's been a while since I've posted, but here's what I've been up to with the old girl this year--retro cross country racing,  1997 style.

(http://inlinethumb35.webshots.com/12130/2238497470100570517S600x600Q85.jpg) (http://sports.webshots.com/photo/2238497470100570517YiDKlF)

I've had her in two provincial races this year and she's held her own against flashy new Cannondales and Gary Fishers.  This is a shot of me during the recent Wascana Challenge race here in Saskatchewan, trying hard not to endo again. Despite the wonky form, I managed a win.

Mountain biking on the Prairies?  Sure--we have reverse mountains.  They're called ravines and valleys.

take care all,
-Brad

This is my Proflex. I hope the purists out there are not upset with what I have done to it. I got the Bike about two years ago from a buddy. He purchased it from the original owner out in Arizona a few years before I got it. He broke his collarbone on the 2nd ride he ever went on and the bike sat in his garage until I finally convinced him to sell it to me. I think 8 months of unemployment also helped in his decision to sell it to me. Since I got the 856 I have enjoyed getting it up and going. Picking out parts and putting them on has been kind of cathartic. Living here in Indianapolis not many people have ever seen anything like it so I usually get lots of questions from other riders. It rides like a dream and I have been riding it virtually every day to work and for fun on the weekends for the past year or so. Got a restored 1972 Schwinn Continental as a spare. Here is what I have done to the bike so far. I am currently waiting for a Risse Racing Terminator air shock to upgrade the rear end. Got new bolt kit and bushings for it to. After that I think I’m done. I appreciate any comments or suggestions.

Keeping it out and about is what counts. I think it looks great. I have an 855 I bought new. Been parked awhile but still love it. I would rather have something with some soul and a unique style. You have done good grasshopper.

My Pro-Flex 254.  700cc wheels White Indusries Hubs, Velocity Aeroheat rims, White Industries Crankset, ugly XT V-brakes.  Still has the Grivin Flex Stem.  This baby flies.

I've never seen another.  It is a very fun smooth ride, nice flat bar city road bike.  I just sold an 854 frame on ebay.  I thought to have this 254 pictured behind the frame to help interest.  It worked, the frame sold but I did receive general questions about the set up on this bike.  I wish I had the proper compression on this bike.  I have a gallery here and maybe the pic looks better.

So much better.  Thanks for the help!   I found the little black caps that fit the chainstay pivot points, still have the ulgy XT V-Brakes though....

I don't post much but soon I willl post a new pride and joy, I am building up a 2005 Razorback Frame I picked up from ediscountbike.com.  It was a one time listing on ebay and I feel lucky to have seen it and made the purchase.   I love looking at all the bikes, especially the 954.

Here's my XP-X ("856") in "Road Warrior" mode:

All set up ready for my London to Paris ride this coming weekend.
(Still got to fit the Rack and Panniers though!)

I'd have really liked to fit a bigger Crankset/Chainwheel combo, I tried a Shimano 30/39/52 but the front Derailleur will not fit higher up to accomodate the big ring without fouling the suspension pivot.
So I've had to stick with the OEM 22/32/44 Sugino.
I had read that this was one of the reasons why the 857 was created with a different pivot point as some racers wanted to run a 52T ring.

But with the Spinergy Rev-Roks and Continental Ultra GatorSkin 1.125" Tyres, she sure does fly!

What I'd like to try next is 700c wheels with disc brakes, Anyone got any experience of trying that? I guess the main issue is the 135mm axle width on the rear which would rule out a standard set of Spinergy Rev's as they are 130mm. Could I just pack out the axle width with washers?

I think I've got the wheel/tyre radius clearance on the forks and swing-arm for 700c, but I've also got a pair of Fournalles Forks that will definately run 700c and even have a disc adaptor!

That'll all be for next year when I'm doing Lands End to John O'Groats!
Unless I give in and buy a nice Cyclocross bike! i.e. the K2 Enemy looks wicked!

Hmmm!
Col.

You may want to posti in the Post BUY/Sell/Wanted thread at the top of the Tech Forum sticky page. A photo and location would be highly recommended. Is it grey, and what size is it?

Here's my '98 K2/Proflex 3000 during it's rebuild last month.  I had the rear Risse Genesis rebuilt, and got a new Genesis to replace the NR2 that was pretty trashed.  Also a completely new drivetrain (except the cranks/chainrings which had been replaced ~5 years ago, but hardly ridden on due to suspension problems), mostly 2009 XT parts.  I've ridden it a few times now, and they work great.  It was significantly cheaper to go with new 9 speed parts than trying to find older 8 speed units.  I'll try and get a photo of the thing all put together.

The stickers were put on many years ago, to cover up the many, many, many dings in the paint from commuting, crashing and branches.  I rather envy the people on the forums here who have the time and money to strip the paint and do a new powder coat: my paint and decals are in pretty sorry shape.

Yeah, a colleague asked me where I bought a Debian bike.  He was very confused -- thought they were branching out.  The Debian spiral has long since worn away, unfortunately.

I've posted mine previously, but now it is days from riding again (would be today if I wasn't so sick) I thought I would throw it up again. People may be interested in the shock mount.

The frame. Still needs all the cables, etc, installed plus a new chain. I'll be using a different wheel set as well.

The shock mount. I did shonky job whipping this together a few years back, but could never get it quiet right. I sent it to a frame builder/repairer/bike engineer over here who tidied it all up for me and it is now rock solid. No hint of flex either. If anyone wants better pics of the mount, let me know.

The warning sticker. People hate that I leave these on my bikes.....I think I do it for the reaction. My race bike still hase the orange warning stickers on the XTR brake rotors. Anyway, you can't be too careful (yes I have the manual).

LOL,  I just gave it a bath and figured it was a good time to get a picture.  It was so dirty it was hard to tell what color it was,  only the chain,  chainrings and cassette weren't filthy but even they needed a good cleaning.  There wasn't a mark on it when I bought it,  it was perfect. It even had the original tires on it in good condition.  I ride it hard and consequently have crashed it at least 6 times pretty hard with the resulting dings and marks.

FWIW,  the tires are Mutano Raptor 2.4 Race and they fit the frame fine. Not quite a true 2.4 but it is a pretty big tire.  With the soft wheels the front will rub on the Noleen ELT fork at near full compression but I have some really nice wheels on the way to fix that.  I'll true the old wheels up again and put some slicks on them in the summer and studded tires in the winter.

Thank you Terry. I was able to really take the bike out today for its first real hard trail runs & I had a blast! I just put on a new Dart 2 front shock yesterday. It handles so well & rides perfect. I just ordered a new Truvativ stem to lower my bars a bit & will rearrange my spacers too so i can experiment.

Frame:  2004 K2 Zed 4.0 (maybe)
Wheels:  Mavic CrossTrail Tubeless/Disc
Tires: Panaracer Fire XC Pro  (Still need to find me some real tubeless tires for out here... 2 rides = 3 flats... everything's sharp out here!)
Brakes:  Avid BB7 Disc
Headset:  Chris King
Front Derailleur:  Sram X-Gen
Rear Derailleur:  Sram X-9
Shifters:  Sram X-9
Stem:  Ritchie Pro
Handle Bars:  SunLine Low Rise
Cranks/BB:  RaceFace Evolve XC
Pedals:  Crank Bro's Acid
Fork:  Manitou R7 (Decals removed)
Seat:  WTB V
Post: No idea

Just finished the build and have only lived out here for a couple months, so I've only had the chance to get on the hills a couple times... but loving it... sure beats the plains of Indy.

That's from the top of South Mountain in Phoenix... it was what should have been a 20-30 minute ride down, ended up being about an hour after all the flats!!!  Just switched over to Kenda Nevegal Tubeless tires, with a lot of stan's... i'll be testing it out today!  Fingers crossed cause at this pace, riding is going to end up being a bit pricey!

You dont see many of these. The only one Ive ever seen in the raw was in the the shop when I bought my 4000.
Cant help thinking that bottle cage position is a bit strange though. Youd get a mouth full of mud or loose it all together if it catches on something.

Hey guys, my names Andy ( ArchieBike comes from my nephews nickname for me as I also ride the bikes of the motor variety)

I am, if totally honest a complete newbie to not only proflex but also mountain bikes. Today I purchased a proflex 678 purely on the basis that it was massively reduced so I have no idea how good the bike actually is so some advice would be great, thank u. The sales did say its a serious bike for the money......probably wasted on a man with as little talent as me haha.

About me:
My name is Kevin and I live on the San Francisco Peninsula. I work with bicycles a lot but am new to mountain bikes. I have a few choppers, as well as some old Schwinns but wanted a good commuter bike. I didn't want to spend a lot of money, unsure of how often I would be riding it, so I was left with the option of buying a K-Mart bike or something used in new condition. It being a week before Christmas and all stores bikes marked down 50% I knew I had make up my mind fast. I am happy with my purchase of this Proflex found on my local craigslist.
My ride:
My bike (I believe) is a 1996 Proflex 656. She has 14 inch (35.6cm) aluminum double butted frame with a chromoly rear triangle. I bought her with new elastomers, new tires and tubes, and a new seat. Other then that she appears to be origanal and in new condition. At 25 pounds she is more kind then the 48 pound full suspension bikes sold at Costco. For under 2 bills I am happy to say I own a Proflex.
Pictures are in the user galleries.

What teh tall fellow said indeedy......... ;D  26lb for a full suss bike is damn good for any vintage, and it's a far better bike than yer Costco jobs or even a decent brand but basic bike. The travel is limited, of course, with the elastomer suspension, but the plus side is it's cheap, light, and almost zero maintenance compared to air or oil shocks (my Proflex 555 shock refurb kit is a tub of silicone grease!)- just the thang for commuting or even general XC riding.

good stuff, although i literally just found them in my box of stuff and shit!  Was looking for my 6mm allen key and there they were.  Just scored a brand new with tags Flite Titanium saddle for 25 dollars.  Reason it was so cheap was the guy bought a load of them in a two tone blue and red and had them dyed black by some upholstery place.  He reckons the dye comes off after about 10 or so rides so we'll see, but for 25 notes i couldn't resist.

I'll just apply a ControlTech or Syncros decal to the old fella and no one would spot it straight away.

Hi all. I'm Audun, living in Norway. New to this forum. Was pleased to see there's still a bunch more riders than me that still ride these old beauties ^_^
Sooo, just thought I'd add my baby here aswell, a slightly modified '97 Beast :D  PS: I'm in need of a new rear shock, preferrably NR-4 or if anyone know if the Fusion-X shocks are available for the x57 frame?

Welcome TP,

The problem we all have is the cone end at the strut shock mount. Some of us has made adapters for shocks like Fusion-X, Manitou, Fox, and such. J6Noleen still sells the NR-4, and Risse makes a really good line of rear shocks with the cone end.

You came to the right place.

How do you get around the extra pivot a conventional shock will give? Do you add an extra link keeping the "seat stays" in place, or do you make an adapter that makes the rear end of the shock one rigid unit?
Does anyone here fabricate them for sale? I tried searching a little, but didn't find anything showing exactly how it's realized.
I'm tempted to go for a new NR-4 really..either that or some adapter allowing the fitment of an RP-23 ProPedal.
I found this one, which I think is for a trek..wondering if it would be easier to make a cone end here, as it don't have the regular eyelet..
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130383206161

Also in the process of having Simon's sealed ball bearing pivot made though. Looks brilliant. I've never thought of the fact that the sliding bushings in the swing arm are loose to be removed, which has put a stop to my thoughts of a bearing pivot :D

Thanks for the response and warm welcome :D

With the cone adapter, you twist the bottom of the shock through 90 degs so as any movement in the bottom fixing can only go sidewards and not up or down. Hope that makes sense...

Ok so this is my first attempt at building an OZ. Ive been building this for ages but finally got it finished(ish) last week. Need to shorten the brake hoses and decide on some grips. The frame was an ebay find a few years ago and was in very good condition except for a broken seat post insert. Simon sorted me out with one of those - many thanks. Ive built it up with a mixture of new and quality old parts I have sorced from my shed and my mate who works in a bike shop.
Group set is XT of various ages, hubs are Gold tech Sams, brakes are Maguras Evo 2 Herzblut (cnc) and seat post, stem, bars are carbon fiber. Shocks are Risse Genesis front and Risse Astro 5 rear( but needs a rebuild) It feels much lighter than my 4000 and climbs effortlessly. I know risers with bar ends are a bit controversial but its in 'Tennis elbow mode' at the moment. They do help and they are carbon so they sort of fit... ;)

Here is my 1997 Proflex 857, bought from ebay and picked up last week.  It was pretty much original when I picked it up, since then I've swapped over a few bits from my other bike and will continue to upgrade as & when needed.
The bikes 1st outing (and my 1st time riding it) was at a 3hour endurance event last week, and it did very well against much newer and more exotic machinery. The race was boggy as hell though and the whole bike was covered in mud by the end... and I mean covered!!  hence I bought some neoprene covers for the NR2 shocks to try & keep them in working order for as long as possible :)

Is the screw on that brake bridge loose?  How much clearance do you have to release the QR on the brake?

I have to get some skins for my shocks for sure.  Took the pair of Proflexes out and around the park this morning with my son.  Got passed by a flock of roadies and one of them said,  "Proflexes!  Awesome bikes!"  Now my son is thinking about having me build him one.  His wife is thinking about the small Animal buildup and one of my nephews wants me to build him one.  A whole herd of Proflexus with the granddaughter on a trailerbike I am thinking.  Hell of a lot less expensive to rehab these old rides than buy anything comparable new.
Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: jimbob on June 05, 2010, 12:39:06 pm
wow!  you must have excellent vision.  I presume you mean the screw on the magura brake booster/bridge thing?
There's plenty of space to use the QR for the Magura brakes, and from what I can see the "other" side of the brake bridge simply slots over & rests on the bolt head on the opposite side. I've tested it and the booster/bridge does it's job of reducing flex whilst also allowing one side of the brakes to be freely removed by operating the QR lever.
I have had the HS33 Racelines in the past but never used them with the Magura QR system, so I "guesstimated" how the thing should all fit together.

I also need to get myself a Magura service kit, or get the brakes serviced as they're not as sharp as they should be, and the rear brake hose needs shortening and feeding through the cable guides, at the moment it's just cable tied onto the bike  ::)
Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: w2zero on June 05, 2010, 01:15:38 pm
I pulled the QR apart on my rear Maguras and reversed it so it points towards the hub, but then mine are earlier bikes.  The bridge fitting over the socket head bolt is the correct way.  Not all LBS's understood that, and further in some apps it is easier to cut off the second hole on the QR side for extra tire clearance.  I don't use the bridge on the rear since the aluminum box section swingarm doesn't flex enough to worry about.

I had toyed with the idea of switching to disc but the expense is more than I want.  I can build a wheel with my existing components pretty cheaply and the Maggies are excellent binders.
Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: jimbob on June 05, 2010, 03:17:46 pm
Hmmm... I might actually have a go at reversing the QR and see how I like it, top tip, thanks.
I already sussed out to chop off the extra hole on the brake bridge, gives much better clearance ;D

As for discs, that may be a longer term option, but obviously that means new wheels and the disc brakes themselves, and fabricating up some mounts..... so for the time being I'm going with the Maguras and Mavic 221 rims, I guess they are the original wheels now into their 13th year :o so I may well get another few years out of them yet ;D

I bought the 855 new and it has had a lot of muddy miles.  Consequently, the rear rim is due for replacement.  Too much grinding of grit and all that.  I rebuilt the wheel early on after breaking some of the original double butted spokes.  All 2mm DT ss now.

Finally got my Oz togeather. I decided I probably would never get it done so I had a friend finish it up for me. Nothing fancy at this point, just wanted to get it out so still have an old set of flat pedals on it. I did have the crank arms and seatpost clamp powdercoated in yellow just to add a bit more color. Also went with braided steel look on the cables because that would look good with the CF frame. At this point it is just over 28lbs. Using a Manitou Swinger 4 on the rear. Good ole XTR stuff still works just fine for me. I can already tell I want a slightly longer stem with more rise. I'm too old to lean that far over!

Here is a proflex I have been working on for my wife. I gave it a bit of an over haul. I bought it on craigslist and gave it a new paint job with all new decals and a slew of new components. One thing I dont know is what model it is. It had original K2 decals... from looking at other bikes, I think it is a 6XX series possibly? maybe a 1997 reptile, or attack? did K2 own proflex in '97? I need help identifying this frame!

I'd say it's a Small 656.

I'd suggest that the decals are not original (as fitted) should be "PRO~FLEX" on the downtube and "656" on the top tube.

i.e. pre K2 days or at least before they were badging them.

I don't believe that "Animal" or "Beast" were ever used for this model.

If the rear shock works OK, then I expect it'll make a nice "little" bike!

Good Luck

I would put it all the way back to a 655 with the chromoly swing arm and no down tube gusset.  Just guessing.  I believe that bike came with elastomers in the back too.

This bike originally was a greenish color with the oval K2 badge on the lower tube and the upper tube had paint over the decal... when I stripped it the decals got trashed. So I know for sure it was a K2. All the decals on there now are all custom done by me.

Also it did have elastomers on the shock, but the guy I bought it from put a rubber handlebar grip with a coil spring over it in the place of the elastomers... it works suprisingly well! But I am retro fitting a new coil-over shock in the back

Hmmm, yes well it's certainly not a true "xx6" year style bike, (i.e. 1996 756/856 etc nor even a '95 {x55} design) it's definitely an earlier design, akin to the x50 thorough to x54 style bikes but I've never seen a small badged as anything but a 656, but looking at the spring rate charts there do seem to have been many models (952, 852, 752, 552, 550, 352, 252)  available in 14" Size right up to 656 and Attack and Reptile.

Possibly the original Green frame colour and the Black Swing-arm implies that it's an "Attack" from as late as '97 ???
http://idriders.com/proflex/resources/97_spcatk.pdf (http://idriders.com/proflex/resources/97_spcatk.pdf)

What do you mean by ".......no down tube gusset"  like on the later x56's behind the steerer tube ? If so, I can see it on the frame diagram above.
Maybe that was just on the later one's of this style from experience gained on the x56's ?? seems likely that they did it on the 656 and Attack to strengthen them up , but maybe didn't bother on the Small size?

Still feel that's it's unlikely that it would have been originally badged as a K2, no disrespect meant as I love them all, but I'm sure the first bikes badged as "K2" were in '98 weren't they? unless the 656/Attack was still on sale then? 656 and Attack were in the 96 catalogue as PRO~FLEX's but not in the '98 catalogue, anyone got a full '97 catalogue? I've just got the 3 page "Hank's Ride" from '97.

What fork has it got? is it original? if not, what was on it? That might help identify it.

Good luck with it and well done for restoring what seems to be one of the rarer of the breed!

Col.

Yes the reinforcement welded to the underside of down tube just behind the  head tube is what I was referring to.  I have a tiny Animal (16") frame hanging in the shop with no gusset, box-section swing arm and pivot behind the seat tube.  It has no gusset either.  Not sure of the year of it but it still has the brake  penetration in the seat tube.

You're right, there were a load of models to choose from.  I recall seeing one xx5 or xx6 new in the shop that had the forward pivot and tubular swing arm when I bought my 855 new.  Not that  I noticed much else since I was all horny for my new bike.  I had them upgrade it to Maguras and xt front der.

Is there a breakdown of serial numbers to define the model year?  Some of the bikes we had in the shop in the eighties would be bumped up to a new model when the factory sent us new decals.
Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: rytoe on October 27, 2010, 11:25:01 pm
I dont know the original front fork... but I do recall it having a K2 "Smart Shock" badge on the seat tube as well. I did some research trying to see if you can identify it with the serial number but no luck there.

The Attack/Reptile frame drawing looks 99% the same except the frame on my proflex is different where the rear shock mounts to the seat tube. On my frame its a triangular piece thats welded to the frame as opposed to the round stem that protrudes on the Attack

One thing I am positive of is that it was originally badged from the factory as a K2.  :-\

I think that's because it's a Small, the diagrams normally show a Medium or Large. Quite often, the Small of a particular model varies a bit in design to allow everything to work.

Hi folks
I've just purchased a nice ProFlex Beast, which I got for my thirteen year old son
We where looking for a hard-tail for him but when I saw this groovy old thing I had to have it

It's in reasonable condition as is but, I will strip it and rebuild/replace what I can
Sadly I don't have much of a budget so it will be mostly used parts
I was wanting to have it painted white but, my son has other ideas (a dark colour with a satin or matte finish)

I'll replace the grip-shifters for sure and possibly the hydraulic brakes...I have done a bit of research and have seen a few folk have added disc brakes which I'd also like to do at some stage

I'll trawl through the forum/web for more info but, I hope you don't mind if I nag for answers around here

I'd be interested, out of curiosity, to know what year this bike might be...can anyone tell from the pictures?

Welcome PANZR,

Your Beast is a 1996. It is the "World Cup Design" , and could be converted to an 856 with different parts spec.

It could be a 97, looks like it has the extra gusset on the top of the down tube , same as mine and that's a 97,
either that or a late 96 ?

It has a frame size sticker on it which states it's a 20"/50.8cm
Would this be a L or XL/way-big?

By the looks, I would say it is a Waybig. I think a Large would be classified as 18".

My Large 957 and Oz both have a 23" toptube, which turns out is perfect for me, but the x57 frames are measured a bit different. I am 5'11".

The 20" measurement I suspect is the distance from bottom bracket to top of toptube. I can't imagine that it would be toptube length.

it's a Way Big - you can tell beause the seatpost mast is extra long.

Thanks for the info...it is rather comfy for my own lanky 6'3" frame

I stripped the bike down the other night and was up till 3am cleaning and polishing most of it (the Girvin forks look fantastic)
It looks really good to my eyes and I'm now doubting the need for a repaint, the paint is chipped and scratched here and there but it's okay, although I don't like the 'Beast' script on the top tube and will try to somehow get it off because it looks so cheap...it makes the whole bike look like something purchased from K-Mart

Changing to disc brakes now looks like a big job so it will wear the Maguras for a while longer which is okay as they do work incredibly well

Thanks again

Hello everyone. Im new to the proflex K2 group. I picked up what seems to be a 1994 954 off of craigslist this past week for $65. Was looking for a beginner trail bike after mainly riding a single speed trek conversion through college as a commuter.  It is unmarked but based on the research I did on this website it looks like a 954.  Came without rear elastomer so I used an old stiff suspension fork spring and wrapped it with an inner tube and tied it off with a couple plastic zip ties (found this method used online).  It provides maybe 1/2 to 3/4 inch travel. Its unclear to me how much travel the original elastomer may have provided.  Had to have LBS replace rear shifter cable and new chain because it would just not shift correctly (I think whoever built it used wrong size chain). Otherwise everything else works great.  Looks like someone tried to do a rebuild because there doesn't seem to be many original components other than the rear derailleur shimano deore xt, Sun rims. Shifters are gripshift, brakes are Avid V brakes, Hubs are T-gear? and fork is Judy SL (maybe a little too soft for me).  This is one vintage frankenbike that I look forward to beating up.

I haven't really thought about that, but being I plan on using and/or have quite a bit of CF and aluminum being used on the bike, my 854 still weighs in at less than 24 lbs atm, I'm probably going to try around 24-25 lbs...if its heavier, so be it...  the bike will still be a piece of art and a joy to ride when it is finished  8)
just like all my cars, I named my 854 - 'Bloody Red' or 'ol Red  when I refer to her...now to think of a name for my 4500 for when it's finished...i have a few names floating around in my head atm  ;)

Here's the K2 with the fork and crankset.

I have XTR 8 speed shifters and rear derailleur I am going to put on along with the XT front will be nice

I would love Magura hydraulic Vs on there.

That crank isn't the one I am using (It's a 46 tooth chainring instead of 44), it was just what I had lying around as I couldn't wait to see it partially together.

Polished frame looks really nice and the bike's not too heavy considering it doesn't have all the weight weenie components. Took it out this morning for its first ride in 10 years. (Long cables and tape to hold them out of the way are temporary.)

Ok I seem to be the new guy on the block. Hey Everyone.  I found this site looking for a disc break adapter for my evo 900. Thanks to { racesrc } I now have one. Custom made and worth every penny. The disc are going on this week just in time for the snow.   My ID  Dr.Z This is what my friends refer to me as because I like to fix anything that screams Help. So I found this evo 900 on Craigs list looking pretty sad. So of course I found my next project. It was completely dismantled, Repainted, Mechanically restored, and now almost completely upgraded.

First pic is the frame after tear down

that looks pretty damn good. i think im going to leave the main triangle paint the way it is for a while, but next month im going to remove the swingarm and have it powder coated gloss black. ill have to disconnect the rear brake line then blead it all over again. not the easiest task. i like your fork and i deffinately want a new rear shock like that one or the fox rp23.

Hey Dave nice ride like the front shocks. Did you swap out your BB with external bearings? Also do you know what the inside mesurements are on the 819 mavics.  The new rear shock was a great bump up, and the fox is the better of the two I belive it has the full lock out feature. The rock shock Im using only has a three position gate.  Not quite a lock out but very close. The only problem with the fox is trying to find one at a good price.

Tubeless that's sweet. Are you running some stans sealer in those. I started using it this spring after a suggestion of thorn tubes and then several flat tires riding the winter debris trail. It's amazing what collects under the snow.Thorn tubes were a waste of cash. Stans best buck I ever spent.  Got a tell ya that blue is awesome.  Anyway I'm sitting here doing several upgrades. One is going to be the discs and new adapter. Do you happen to know what the thread size and pitch is for the holes in the drop out. New add ons will be xt plus shifters. front xt hub, elixir hydraulic breaks and the adapter blacked out.  Got a 4am ride in to work on Monday and hope the new gear is ready to roll.

Thanks Dan

That stem's certainly a "one of a kind" ! - Great solution though!

Yep, get them elastomers sorted and you'll have a great ride once again.

Try using the "insert image" button when posting (above posting, 2nd from left, bottom row) and put the photo URL inbetween the "img /img" fields in square brackets for the photo's to appear like magic in your posting.

Yeah, I'm afraid so.

I biked a lot in my early teens, pre-driver's license.  Then not so much for the next 35-40 years.  Started biking to work this past summer and enjoyed it a lot.

As a result, I wasn't following the mountain bike industry when the ProFlex line was the hot new thing.     I had never even thought about it until a co-worker offered to sell his.

My first thought was, "what a strange looking bike."   But the look grew on me and when I read up on some of the history of the bike, I became hooked!

i mounted up my new FOX RP23 last weekend, it started snowing friday. coudn't ride untill today, to work this morning, 16 degrees out, still a little snow on the ground but i coudn't wait any longer. what a difference a shock can make. i work a little over a mile from home, 1/2 mile up hill then a mile down hill to work. it felt really good, no clunking, no pogo stick, no sticheon. cant wiat to hit some local trails. another great side effect was shaving a pound off the weight of the bike. 27.2 pounds now for a evo that weighed 31 ish when i started this build.

Are the bombers air shocks?

2003 dirt jumper 1 air preload coils in oil with adjustable rebound and compression. With 20mm QR axle. Very nice fork off ebay in mint condition for 130 bucks shipped. I am selling the k2 frame now on ebay, got a brand new frame jamis Dakar xam 2 and put my wheels and fork and XT drivetrain and Hayes stroker aces on it. It came with a fox dhx air 5.0 rear shock and integrated headset. I baught a Thomson seatpost and stem and a EASTON haven carbon handlebar for it. That fork is much more at home with the new frame. The bike is SICK. Much more capable for my large build. The k2 had too much flex for my liking.

Hi everyone,
New to the site- was directed here through various searches. Found my first ProFlex late last week, am a sucker for a nice vintage ride. Been riding an early '90s Gary Fisher for a couple of years and saw this at a local resale shop for a steal! This bike is awesome!! Beautiful 857 with some changes. Previous owner added XTR rear derailleur, cassette and hubs to an already awesome beast!! Can't wait for weather to break just a bit more to go try this out:) Thanks for having and maintaining this site- want to keep this bike for a while and it's great to have some connections to things like maintenance and replacement part info since parts aren't readily available for these bikes anymore. Have a great day!!

Hi there.. this is my introduction, too :)

So here's my 962.

Originally I had a 752 but the frame broke in '94, so I received a 962.
That picture is about 6 years old and I promise I'll post some new ones soon.

and yes.. it's still running!

Hello,

This is my intro as well.  I'm amazed with all the info on this site.  I have a 97 Proflex Beast that's in great shape.  It has the Pipeline Chubby and the Noleen NR-2.  HS11's still work great.  I've never had to bleed them! I've had the Beast since 2000 and it was my first mtb although it's not my primary rider anymore.  I just built up an 06 Turner 5 Spot that I bought used...really enjoying that bike.

I'm trying to decide if I should update my Beast with a Fox 100 RLC and a Fox RP3 that I have laying around from my Rocky Mountain that cracked.  That's what brought me to this site...trying to figure out if it's feasible or if I should leave it be.  Right now my girlfriend rides my Beast when I drag her riding with me.  It's way too big for her tho since it's a Way Big size.  I'm trying to post a pic...having trouble seeing it on Preview, so here goes!

Matt

Here is my '95 Proflex 855 w/upgrades. Kooka Racha hydro levers, Magura calipers. Noleen carbon fork. Noleen coilover adjustable shocks front and rear. Shimano XT derailleurs. SRAM Grip Shifters, 3 x 9. I upgraded from a seven to eight cog years ago and then did some machining to bump it up to a 9.

I love it so far, got the frame for xmas off of pinkbike.  Myback is messed up so I needed a fully to replace my trek 8000 with broken derailleur hanger. Worked out well didn't get to keep the  xtr btm swing der but the new xt is nice and the fox blows away the smart shock, its lighter a little longer and stiffer.... caint wait to hit the trails back in kansas.

...my Rock Shox Monarch RC3 (8.5"-2.5" HV/MT) arrived and need the correct hardware now to get it mounted on my 4500 as well...

just an update, I actually ordered the shock mounting hardware and tool from RWC and they are supplying the shims and bolts needed for mounting the shock as well.  Chris Streeter was very helpful to make sure I had the right parts for my application, so if anyone is interested, here ya go...

Here is my Pro-Flex 757. Bought this bike new in 1997 and don't regret it, even after 16 years. :)
All original, except for the brakes and rear shock and stem.

awesome Rob :)

an update on my 4500c....I have all the parts but one for the build, my crankset. I should have that ordered soon ;) here are some current pictures of the bike so far, some parts aren't installed yet, like my black/red Selle Italia SL flow saddle, hammerhead adapter (can't find my tapset so gonna pick up just what I need to install it lol), jagwire shift wire housing, FSA carbon stem (controltech carbon stem from my 5000 build on it temporarily as I don't have the front forks for it yet lol), SRAM 1091 chain, Shimano spd 785 pedals and one Specialized red bottle cage...

Not to feel out done by your fine creation, heres my latest.
Ive done a dry build just to see how it will look and Im pretty happy with it!
The forks are Fox Talas and are set at 130mm in this photo but adjust down to 90mm. The rear shock is the Fox RP23 I bought recently. Ive fitted a Hammerhead and Hope disc to the rear now instead of the HS33 in the picture. Ive left the steerer uncut at the moment untill I ride it and find a riding position that suits.
I just need a bit of time off building a house extension to finish it.

Hi all. I'm new to the forum and have just read this entire thread from beginning to end. I have to say I am astonished at the love and enthusiasm for these old bikes. I ride a white/Red 757 which I have owned from new since 1997. I used to race it on the Southern Counties race scene in the UK back in the day. It may be 16 years old but it still rides like a pup (unlike me). Reading this forum has made me realise that I haven't devoted anywhere near enough care to the old girl as I have mainly been busy just getting out and riding at every oppurtunity then giving it a quick rinse and throwing it back in the shed. However just recently while out on the local trails I have on a couple of occasions been stopped by guys on amazingly specced brand new machines who couldn't eulogise enough about how my bike was the pinnacle of mountain-bike design and wished they had one. Needless to say this stopped me in my tracks and made me look a bit more closely at my chosen steed. After poring over many Proflex related items on the interweb I find that I have a new-found respect for the bike that has conveyed me across the South of England, The Isle of Wight and parts of Northern France and is still holding its own against the whippets on the local trails (youth can't beat trailcraft). Keep up the good work guys.  :D

Yep they certainly get under your skin! I don't think there is a photo of a red and white 757 on here so why not post a pic of yours here and be part of Proflex history  :)

Will do. Might not have time tonight though as the weather is brightening up a tad so might head out to my local haunt at Fowlmead near Deal, Kent. It's a purpose made trail so not as much fun as open country but good for a quick blast. I'll then need to give the old girl a rinse before taking any snaps. Cheers.

Okay here it is. My pride and joy. I had the wheelset built on Mavic 517 rims by local wheelbuilder Harry Rowlands. XT shifters, LX front, XT rear, original girvin spuds, WTB Speed V saddle (just the best saddle ever) and original Crud-Catcher (I also have an original Crudguard). I sent the shocks to CVI in the UK for servicing a few years ago. They not only serviced them but called me to ask me my weight and what kind of riding I did so that they could set them up properly for me. Needless to say when they came back they felt dialled-in straight away and I haven't touched them since. I love this bike.  :)

Excellent!
There's something about the red and white colour scheme of the 757 the I really like.
It's a shame but I'm sure CVI have gone now. I rang them about a service on my Risse shocks and they said they no longer deal with shocks of any sort.
Keep riding and tune in here if you want a chat  :)

Nice bike Piko.  I see you have a Kona Hahanna too.  I transferred the parts from my first mtb, a Sekai, to a Hahanna frame and fork that I thrashed for several years before buying the 855 I am still riding.

...on another note, knowing that my 4500 only needs the crankset to finish my build, I will have an Oz-M frame soon as well (thx to Brycer). AND, i'll be looking at someone's old unused Proflex this sunday, for cheap cash....the current owner said it's a 653, but we shall see this weekend....I told him I was looking for a parts bike, mainly wanting a vector fork to replace the marzocchi xc300 I have on my 854...dying to see the condition of the bike (was already told the MCU's are melted lol)...

I dunno...haven't contacted the seller about it.   I did pick up that other I mentioned on Friday....on the phone, he said it was a 653... I don't ever recall there being one back then, and couldn't find the list of proflex bikes built in '93 lol...anyhoo, I met with him during my 4 hr break from work (LOL)...as I was pulling up to his driveway, he was standing with the bike near his S10 pickup....I already new I was going home with it.... It IS a medium 756, and in great shape, with the exception being the melted MCU all over the bike (replacements np) (:P), grips worn and deteriorating (easy replacements), an el-cheapo bmx seat was installed, and the seatpost was cut way too short for me (both are gonna get replaced)...no biggie, I figure less than $200 will bring it back to excellent working shape ;)

Ah, that's good!  I guess the cellar is a poorer option... no thoroughbred wants to live in the barn!

I almost lost my black dog last night... he went outside with the snow falling and decided to lie at the top of the slope in the snow and enjoy the night sounds and smells... enough snow fell to turn him white and I almost tripped over him when I went out to see why he wasn't already inside and in bed!

If he's fine with those conditions, I guess I can't judge your bike...  8)

Well, the 957 frame turned up and it's a beauty! Everything seems OK with it and it turns out it is a Medium, so;
a) I'm a bit upset as I'd have liked it as my road ride,
but;
b) I have been looking for a Medium for the Missus, so I guess I'll have to let her have it! <GRIN>

p.s. It didn't come with the Crosslinks, I'll probably put a set of Fournalles on it if I go to 29er and then use disc brakes.

The great thing about having these three is that the riding position feels nice and familiar but all three ride differently. Each one is an excellent bike.

Thanks guys

Those HED wheels took me ages to get them, they're difficult to find.

I've just found in my LBS another old pair and probably I'll get them soon.
There were two kinds of this model: the carbon fiber one and the fiberglass that they made for the proflex animal.
Mines are the first ones (carbon), but the model of my LBS are from an animal, so they are the fiberglass ones.
Don't matter for me.

my 1999 4000 RS. I Bought it new and it has less than 1000 miles on it. It sat for several years without use, but I now ride it a couple times a week. Had the chance to sell it, but just couldn't let it go.  Upgraded to xt v-brakes, and better rims with nuke proof hubs, and besides that it's stock.

I'm working in my 550 to make it a frankenbike-monstercross for long rides (>100 km)

Not finished at the time. Not period correct, the forks are from 1993 and the wheels (you saw it in my RF-1) are from 1995. The bars and brake levers are modern too.
Cable guides will be white, as the bar tape will be white too, but I'm not 100% sure. The brakes will be Suntour pedersen in the front too.
I suppose I'll start riding on it next week end.

Hope you like. If you don't I'll understand. I have a flat bar, some thumbies and ritchey levers if I regret from drop bars.

I like that a lot! I've been toying with a similar idea with my 857, a kind of full sus cyclo cross bike. I recon that will a lot of fun!  :)

Since the damage done to the site pretty much toasted everything from September, here's an image posted and lost that should or could fit with this thread:

It's my 857, but it's seen some modifications over the years.  Front fork is a Marzocchi Bomber Z-1, which was quite the advance back in the day with huge travel.  Rear end is Noleen NR-4.  Race Face crankset and bar, Profile BOA stem, NRG seat and pedals etc.  Tires were even purpose-selected by the original owner for front/rear performance (although not sure how big a deal it actually was!).

Frame is clear coat on the aluminum after paint stripped off.  The original owner (a friend) built it this way from new condition as a downhill racer... before downhill bikes really existed.  He rode the motocross circuit before a workplace accident that impacted his hearing and balance, so he came at the modifications from the perspective of a motocross rider I daresay!

Still rides super-smooth, just wish the rear cassette was a little more suitable for going UPhill!!!

This isn't mine, but spotted it outside a general store at a place called Stovepipe Wells in Death Valley, CA

The bike was well, very well ridden had a NR2 and a smart-fork(?). The owner said it was the most reliable bike he ever had (gasp) His riding buddy was on a nice Surly. Off they went in 100 degree heat, no brain buckets, no water....

Pretty sure this bike has been around the block. ;)

Well, he did change out the Grip Shift for integrated XTR shifters/brake levers, and XTR brakes, but I think that was it.

Chris

After Market (AM) Crosslinks came with a pair of rubber bump stops ("slugs") to glue onto the rear edge of the legs to also help stop dents.
They might have appeared on the last of the x57's as OEM as well, but not 100% sure of that.

Yes my 857 has those from new although they are quite firm so I don't know how effective they would be. The pixie saddle on rjneu's frame is good as it could be used to cover a dent as well.

http://idriders.com/proflex/smf/index.php?action=media;sa=album;in=61 (http://idriders.com/proflex/smf/index.php?action=media;sa=album;in=61)

A Small 4000 in near perfect condition, to be built up for 'er indoors instead of the Medium OzX which is too big for her.

I bought it from the original New purchaser who got it from a bike shop somewhere near Exmoor at about the turn of the century. Looks like it was built up from a blank frame as there are no other recognisable "K2" type components as would have been fitted to a full spec bike.

Just got to get on with it now!

Still looking for a Small x57 style frame as well!

Col.

A few days ago.

Very little progress made since then, it has now the XT fd-m739 front derailleur and the seatpost has been shortened so it fits now (I only had to chop the protruding, slanted front of the post).

Soon going in are the new pedals, wheels (XT M-737 + Mavic 238, both eBay NOS bargains) and tires (the ones in the pictures are new but while I got tired of the red side pretty quickly, I was not happy when I realized that I ordered the wire version of the tire instead of the folding one and at the time could not find the folding+red side anywhere)

Unfortunately the rear shock leaks oil badly, and I can't seem to find a replacement for it and NoleenJ6 doesn't seem to answer my e-mails. I am thinking about building an adapter that will allow me to install any rear shock there, the mounting brackets are barely fitting anything else than the stock shock. I know that there are fitting replacements (RP23, float, swinger etc.) but i could not find any available at a price i want to pay. I may give a shot at the stock shock from the Jumpy Monkey frame i purchased, it may not as bad as I initially though, at least it's not leaking oil. I start thinking I am too chubby for these bikes at 220lbs...

I have a RP23 and a Float R on two of mine and they were cheap enough on eBay. I payed around £30 each for them and they fit with no modification to the frame or swingarm. eBay probably is your best bet. Don't give up you're nearly there!

Chris
Title: Re: Reader's bikes: post your pride and joy here!
Post by: serviceguy on October 05, 2016, 03:55:58 pm
RP23 used aren't cheaper than $150-$175 on eBay these days. I've spent less on a new Revox that doesn't fit as well as a Monarch which doesn't fit either...

As it sits now she sports a NR2 with a 650lbs coil (I am about 220 so it's a little bit of an overkill but that is what it came with) from the spare Bumpy Monkey frame in the rear and the rebuilt NR2 from the carbon crosslink I bought on eBay is going on the front (spring rate unknown). At least I can ride it like that without oil spraying everywhere while I try to a) rebuild the NR4 or  b) get it rebuilt if NoleenJ6 gets back to me. Ironically the only rebuild kit I've found is sold by nonetheless than NoleenJ6!

I have had more goodies coming in to build the Bumpy Monkey frame as well, it's going to be a XT-M785 2x10 with disc brakes, not sure what to do with the front but the rear came with the stock disk bracket so that is covered.

I'll post pictures of the progress (little) as soon as I have a chance.

Finally managed a short ride in the park with the bike all bottoned up...bobbing a little bit but otherwise it runs like a dream, the complete XT drivetrain is really smooth, I am not really used to it! It is going to be fun! Now I need to accessorize, bottle cage, rear lighting and helmet all need to be sourced.

Little uodate on the 4000 as it sits in its final configuration (for now)...

...and where the Bumpy Monkey is going in terms of paint scheme (it's no longer a frame, I'll post pics as soon as available). Luckily the frame came with the origianl bracket, so I was able to go with disc brakes on this build. I had been entertaining the idea of front disc brake on a crosslink fork this one, but for now it will be sporting a more humble Marzocchi AM2 130. Rear shock is a Fox RP2 remote that I was able to source on eBay new for a fair price.

Hello all...
It is time to give some rest to my old 856. It has been well used in the portuguese trails.
But 20years are always 20 so I have found one of the possible substitute for her .
It is a Scott spark 950 and this bike just proof what an extraordinary bike  is the proflex 856. I will not put it on a shelf, instead it will be ready for more adventures.
Here are some photos of them.
I suppose that there aren't many factory test like my 856.
Have  nice rides.

Bringing my 97 Animal into the current century...I installed disc brakes! It took quite a bit of fabrication, but I finally have a functional rear disc mount; the bracket is currently 90 grams, but after I do some skeletonizing and shaping, I expect it to be no more than 65.  Let me know if you want details and I can take some measurements and different pictures.

After 20 years of riding my '97 Animal, I decided to modernize.  At the time I posted this, the bike weighs in at 23.2 lbs. There is very little original equipment remaining. This bike is extremely light, almost too light, but very practical.  Fast on the road and on trails, and I don't feel like I need to buy any newer frame to keep up with others. Pro-Flex standing the test of time! If anyone is interested in my sources or why I chose these particular items just let me know. Most of them were a balance of light weight and practicality.

Current component/mod list:

-'97 Animal Frame with carbon swingarm (brake bosses drilled and removed, not exactly sure on weight; guessing about 2680 g)
-Original Shifter Cable housing (~70 g)
-Aheadset w/ti bolt & Bontrager carbon cap (94 g)
-Aluminum Seatpost Clamp (28 g)
-Fox Evolution fork (1706 g)
-DNM AOY-36RC air shock w/lockout (had to fabricate attachment to seat stays) (307 g)
-160mm front/rear Deckas brake rotors (85 g each)
-iPower 2-piston Hydraulic brake levers/lines/calipers (had to fabricate rear mount 50 g) (417 g for the set)
-RockBros carbon/CroMo saddle (207 g)
-Carbon EC90 Seatpost w/Ti bolts (170 g)
-Ullicyc carbon 700mm riser handlebar (144 g)
-Wake aluminum stem (123 g)
-Mongoose grips (80 g)
-SRAM X.O 9 speed grip shifters/front & rear derailleurs (507 g total)
-Speedplay Frog pedals w/Ti axles (206 g)
-BB68A Bottom Bracket 118mm (248 g)
-XTR cassette 11-32 (261 g)
-Kooka Bonnie Cranks (original 44/34 chainrings & Avid 20t granny) (560 g)
-KMC X9 Chain (280 g)
-American Racing MTB Race 26" Wheelset (gorilla rim tape for tubeless) (1340 g)
-1.5 oz Orange Seal endurance sealant (per wheel) (~85 g)
-American Racing Stainless QRs (99 g)
-Chaoyang Merlin 299 Dinoskin tires Front and rear (618 g)
-Faux carbon water bottle cage (20 g)

Planned projects:

-Remove extra material beneath seat tube (near shock)
-Remove rear water bottle lugs
-Grind on fabricated shock mount to remove non-structural material
-Powder coat (black) shock triangle and rear caliper mount
-Jagwire (or similar) shifter housing
-Cork tape grip replacement
-Ceramic derailleur pulleys
-Various Ti bolts at all shock pivots, crank arms, stem and brake mounts
-Titanium seatpost (due to scary stories of broken carbon posts, and reduced weight)

It's been a long time in the making and it's not 100% finished yet (brakes need bleeding, chain needs a couple of links added as you can see from the pictures and the bottle cage needs to be moved to the correct place).

It was born as a 2002 K2 Bumpy Monkey. I got the frame for a good price and had it powder coated, added a complete XT 10 speed group on it (originally a 3x then decided to go with a Race Face 1x and OneUp Components full setup).

Not yet, as soon as I bleed the brakes and remove the left shifter I'll weight it and report back. Rims and tires are not exactly lightweight though.

I am with you, hopefully the bike is going to allow me to shed some weight soon!

Not really concerned about the bike weight, I can't honestly think of anything that could be further shed on iy, other than replacing alloy with carbon anywhere possible and going tubeless.

Actually no modifications to the frame/swingarm. Frame and swingarm have been powder coated with a matte green and black respectively. The frame paint was in very good shape but I just could not bear the paint scheme. I wish the Marzocchi fork was matte too. And lighter, it's kind of a pig but it came kind of cheap, so...

by the way one added the two missing chain links and removed the left shifter the bike weights in at 25.5 pounds. Other then use all carbon parts I don't thing there's any way of (of point to ) getting it any lighter..

So no fouling by the shock on the lower mount or anywhere else through the swingarms full travel?
If so, I think that's a first for an air shock, isn't it?
Which model of Fox shock is it?

Well, the bike held well...the rider not so much! Riding with a group of supposedly 'Out Of Shape' guys made me realize how really out of shape I am. Not giving up though. Made a few minor adjustments to the bike setup (replaced the 32T chainring with a 30T and tilted the stem to a -6 degrees). Here she is.
