Title: avid disc mech brakes

What do you think avid disc mechanical brakes for the Evo style frame? :o

Sure why not....

Jury is out here... I think that almost half of us run Formula B4.. and other half avids... and the rest run something else ;-)

Why not.... If they are good enough for IFO... then chances are they be enough for you....

Haven't used mine a lot yet, but they kick my XT V-brakes' butt by a good margin. I love them. You can get lighter brakes, but not at the same price point. 8)

they are that good...

esp. if u wanna keep your costs down...

my one word of warning is to use hi-quality levers thou...it makes a huge differnce...

my personal suggestion is to use Avid SD levers, but i hear people have equally good luck with XTR V-levers aswell...

i have got a whoel wack of guys onto Avids, not one has ever regretted it...in fact most are so happy they wont upgrade to hydros.. cuz theres no point...

hahah in fact one guy in our riding group bought the 8" Avids cuz he didnt fully beleive me, when i said how powerful the 6" brakes were... well he now has to put WD40 on his rotors cuz the brakes are simply to Powerful... hahhaahah.....

theres only one reason to go with hydro over mech discs and thats if you ride in muddy conditions alot. mech are great as long as its dry but if its wet and muddy your still going to get cable stiction.

just food for thought...

well up here we ride on the "North Shore" where its wet/muddy all teh time... :o

i've never had a problem with cable stiction. at least not during a ride... sure u have to clean your cables every now and then, but no more so then any other bike part that should be serviced...

the trick with Mech discs is to run full length cable housing... to hell with the factory cable routing, eheheh.... [smiley=laughing.gif]

Agreed.  My first Avid installation was not with full length housing.  It got gummed up quite often.  I finally switched to full length and was surprised that the full length was just as smooth as the other way.  

The only problem I ran into is the hard full length cable is notching the frame at the contact points.  I'm going to look for softer foam or rubber tubing to put over the cable at the contact points.

well i guess if you want to add 3 ft extra housing to your ride that would do it. one thing you dont have to do with hydros.
