As some of you have heard from my previous posts, my 4500 is out of service for a while... not much luck with K2, so I'll probably end up having a machine shop make the part I need.
In the mean time, my "project" bike has become my main bike - the 3 speed 5000. I replaced the rear cassette with a single cog, terminated the rear der. cable at the swingarm and removed the rear shifters.
While it may make even less sense than a single speed mountain bike, it's proven to be a lot of fun to ride. I run 44/32/22 in the front and pick the rear cog for ride. The biggest I use is a 19 for a lot of single track up-hill, down to 15 or so for fire roads / short road rides.
I like it so much I may even put the cassette on the 5000 make the 4500 the three speed once I get it back together.

yeh I'm not sure that makes a lot of sense but if it's fun and you like it, it's cool. I'm sure it makes for lots of trailside conversations. I'd rather keep the rear shifting but lose the front der, saves wt and if you set it up right you wouldn't lose many gear ratios, at least not ones that you use much.

my 857 SS was reincarnated as a "3" speed, until i took off the big and granny rings. it's not ideal, but it does work!

What kind of rear cassette is that (if I can call it that)
Is it just a sleave for the Freewheel. Or is it Part of your Mavic Hub. Just wondering. At a glance It had me fooled for an internal shifter Hub.

It's the standard Mavic hub with a single cog and a Spot spacer kit. I've also used PVC spacers with good results, but I think the Spot kit looks much better.
