Since lokomonkey brought it up. ??? You want to list the estimated weight of your bike, Proflex/K2 or whatever bike you ride.
Small 2000 Evo weighing in about 32-33 lbs. Pyslo SL, Avids disc, Rhino Lites, Answer Pro Taper bars, Azonic Shorty stem, Sram X-ray shifters, Avid 2.OSD levers, old WTB saddle, American Classic post, Noleen NR2 shock, XT derailleurs, Raceface Protigy(sp) crankset, Shimano bottom bracket, Sram 5.0 cassette and Specialized Roller Pro 2.5F and 2.3R. ;D

Somewhere in there. I'd prefer 27, but the disc brakes are worth the extra weight! This is a '98 5000 size Large with X-vert Super (actually not a Super, but it has an alloy steerer. Must be OEM), LX cranks, XT shifters/front der., XTR rear der., Kalloy bar, Kore Lite Forged Stem, Speed V saddle, Avid Discs w/ SD5 levers, Bontrager Race Disc Modified wheelset, Helix Pro rear, etc.
My wife's Medium '98 5000 has Avid Arch rivals, same fork, 8-speed GripShift (w/ Shimano XTR rear), Mavic CrossLink wheelset, Risse Astro-5 rear shock, Real brake levers (light buggers), etc. Feels about 2 lbs lighter (but that's not confirmed with a scale - just my guess! It's enough of a difference that it's noticeable. Especially with that Risse). Probably under 27lbs. A very nice ride considering I got it virtually new for $450 (I replaced the RaceFace cranks with Shimano and the RockShox fork with the superior Manitou and actually came out almost $100 AHEAD! That means the actual cost was closer to $350!!! Hard to believe. (though I did get a brand new set of Shimano hollowtech cranks for $12...)

Are the Bontrager XC specific? The only way I could decently lighten my bike is with a lighter wheelset and tires. I weight about 140 lbs.

My 5500C weighs in at just over 28 pounds with disc brakes. I had it just below 26 with vees and some other lighter components. The couple of extra pounds is well worth it.
My 98 Animal (it really is a '98 ) tips the scale right at 33 pounds. Its built tough. I also added metal springs to the Chubby LT fork. Again, well worth the weight.
When I'm throwing the bike around on a fast crosscountry trail, I do like the lighter bike. But, I've never really had a problem peddling the Animal up our Ozark hills.

I think they are. I was told they are a pretty tough wheelset, but I'm pretty sure they're not downhillers! I'm not at home right now or I'd post their actual weight, but it was surprisingly light. However, they are a little heavier than my previous set of Ritchey XC wheels. (Which was disappointing since according to claimed weights, they should have been lighter! However, I never actually knew what my old wheels were supposed to weigh, so I suspect they were lighter than I thought. The Bontragers are quite light. OP has a set (which are either the same model or a very similar one) and says he has roughed them up quite a bit with no problems.
All that rambling aside, at 140 (same as me), an XC wheelset will be fine for all but the roughest of riding (big drops that is). I rode my Ritchey wheels in some super rocky conditions when I lived in Utah, and never even had to true them. So far, the Bontragers have stayed perfect, though I haven't ridden them as much as I would like!
A good light wheelset will make more of a difference in your bike's performance than anything except maybe suspension and/or tires. If yours are heavier than you want, an upgrade is in order! 8)

Large Oz, Hopey, Mega~Air, Xt drivetrain with/Xtr rear der. dinner plate 34t XTR cass. Xt disc, Hugi hubs Mavic rims, brass nips, taper spokes RaceFace Xy post, Thompson stem, Monkeylite bar, wtb saddle and the other little things add up to a hair under 28#
for the kind of riding i do the weakest link is probably...me!

Hey, since you have access to IFO's bike, I'm assuming you rode it. What's the difference in ride compared to your Bullit? Pluses - Minus?
I don't want to hear IFO's opinion because we all know it's biased. ;D

Yes, I have access to ride his bike, and do so on a pretty regular basis. Hell, I put it together! (And stole the first test ride on it, but that is a whole different story. :))
IFO's Big Hit is very nice. He runs flats, and I run SPDs, his bike is a little lighter (but so is he) and his front fork is more responsive on the little stuff, but more flexy.
The Big Hit rear suspension feels more active, and eats up bigger bumps than my 5th element. My 5th element pedals a lot better, the suspension doesn't steal any effort.
I want to try a lighter weight spring on my 5th, as the one that is on there is I think one grade too high for my riding weight now.
I've always been a big fan of single pivot bikes, but I gotta admit, if I were buying another new bike today, and could get the Big Hit with a Romic or 5th element instead of the Fox RC, it would surely be in my short list of frames.
The ONLY reason that I bought the Bullit was the 5th element. I wouldn't buy a bike without it, now - that or the Romic, anyhow.
Bottom line - for riding down the hill, I prefer IFO's bike to mine. For pedaling up the hill, I prefer my Bullit. Kinda ironic, considering as how you normally would rather pedal the lighter weight bike!

Yes, I'm a weight weenie! But a frugal one thanks to eBay and a willingness (read necessity) to turn my own wrenches. I added up my parts cost/weight though and it wasn't so bad:
Had it weighed on a calibrated l.b.s. scale-22.30 w/o pedals, fender, SKS airgun, or mud. For some reason manufacturers claimed weights do not include pedals. You could always run Conti Twister Supersonics or Fast Freds tires instead-they weigh the same at a normal width but are expensive too. I race with the 1.5 in back and a 2.35 Vertical pro up front it's a fast, safe combo @ 1000 grams

32 lbs...yes, it's an 856.
...most of the excess weight is from the fork and the lined, slimed and HD tubed tires....those damn goat-head/bull-head thorns.

Give the Stans or the new Eclipse style of tubeless, puncture proof systems a try. Eclipse is newly imported here by "Light Bikes". You can find out more on the "Save Some Weight" forum at MTBR.com that's full of experienced users of both systems. I think you'd be able to toss the d.h. tubes and still be puncture free.
