Hi all! Just joining you from So. Cal. and new to the forum. I've been reading the threads with interest. Great balanced, even, courteous exchange of infromation and ideas.
I'm bringing back to life a great old Proflex 856 to ride once again, but I'm having trouble finding replacement parts for the main pivot. I'd like to replace the bearings and inner and outer O rings while it's apart. Just got it back from powdercoating and it looks great. I'll post a pic once I finish it. Does anyone know of any shops still carrying some of the small parts? Help, I gotta ride it!

Hi Bill. I actually rebuilt my 856 last summer. K2 should still stock the parts. You just have to get a local K2 dealer to order them. I did that here in Canada and everything came in about 4 days. Good luck! Take some pics of the process and put them up in the gallery.
Here is my restored 856. There have been some other changes since those pics though.

just to add what Trevor said....any LBS cabn get k2 parts so if you have a connection, go there first. REI still is a k2 franchise?, that might work

the 97 657 is actually the x56 frame ;) so its all good!
what you need is a RK002,a world cup frame rebuild kit,which includes all that you said plus the sleeves for the strut bearings at the outboard end of the swingarm plus some k2 goo
where are you at Bill.There are a couple of (in)famous proflexers around those parts......

Thanks for the tips. I did download the parts lists and will contact my LBS to see if they can get the RK002.
I'm in Orange County. We ride primarliy the Santa Ana Mountain trails, but hit the other local spots on a regular basis.

I'm also curious to hear from you guys on rear shocks. I've read all the threads on the forum to get educated on the choices. But I'm curious if anyone used a shock not designed for the bike's unique mounting fixture? Are there adapters out there or has anyone fabricated their own fixture at the rear point to mount a more traditional eyelet config.? I'm looking at a Risse shock, but I also like the features from other makes as well as service I've received.

:) Welcome to the board. There are some here that have made adapters to fit other shocks (like fox I believe). If you have the MCU's you may be able to just replace them with a coil if you have the gold color ODS shock. It is a inexpensive upgrade and could do the trick for a while if you are still thinking about a diferent shock like the Risse or Stratos. Enjoy that bike it still is one of the best XC climbers around. I dusted mine off and took a spin Saturday it is very light and quick.

Take a look at the posts by "Guman" under files for a custom RockShox fitted to a ProFlex like yours, might be under his Gallery too. Post your pics too!

Either Scott or Simon on this board did a main pivot conversion. He changed his K2 stock needle bearings to sealed bearings.
Just wanted to mention this as a another alternative, but it may be more time consuming.

Yep that was me,conversion was on a carbon 4500 and it was from bushes to sealed bearings,done a Aluminium and a carbon arm now,looking at my 856 I cannot see a problem with a similar conversion,may look at that in the future.Simon.

Sealed bearings...got bearing envy. I'm having a "while I'm in there" episode. The gallery and threads have me rethinking my Proflex 856 rebuild plan. I've been riding a light hardtail for years. No, not a weight weenie, just like to climb. I like the Proflex design for simplicity, durability, design and...weight. Timeless. I just got the frame powdered and on the bike stand. I was going to swap parts from the HT and upgrade worn bits. Can't do it. Called Risse today for a new rear shock and a new drive train will arrive any day.
I also ordered the main pivot rebuild kit from K2... But the sealed bearings...Simon - Can you show me a pic or give me an idea where you sourced them? Any machining involved?

Just had a quick look on my wife's (my old bike) 856,conversion appears relatively straight forward,will investigate further and draw up some plans if it all seems feasible,Simon

I would be really interested in this as well. I have a couple of RK002's lying around for future use and I was going to order some more but maybe a bearing conversion is a better idea. 8)
Simon - Do you think the conversion would change the ride of an 856? Did you weigh the parts that you used for your 4500? I am a weight weenie so I would be interested in what the net gain/loss in weight would be with the conversion. ;D

I'd like to think the ride would be improved, it should be but we won't be sure until someone tries it,
I didn't weigh my 4500 conversion parts, however the through shaft is very light,probably compareable to the bearings that it replaced,the 4 sealed bearings are suprising light but weigh more than the bushes they replace,however as some material is removed from the s/arm pivot (opened up from 22mm to 24mm dia) that helps compensate the weight gain of the bearings,all in all I don't think there has been any weight gain.Simon

I just purchased a risse genesis from Ebay that is designed for a Santa Cruz Tazmon. I am planning to mount this on my 855. I was also looking at mounting a smart shock as well when this genesis came along. It all depends on your access to a well equipped workshop or finding someone that is willing to take on a one off job.I'll post some pics of my efforts as soon as i get done.. if i dont give up in the meantime and order the conversion bits from risse.
