What is the max travel of fork that could be put onto 98 Proflex 4000
-
6" is about the longest stroke fork I have seen mounted on one.
Here's some builds to give you an idea.

Anyone have any opinions about Marzocchi Z.1 Drop Off Shocks, 2000

You could put a fork as long as you want on the bike but doing so will obviously change the geometry. my forks on my 4500 are about 15.25"and provides a 71 deg HT I don't see anything wrong by going up to 16.25" the HT angle will only decrease (70,69,68)
Try some mock test on your bike with some simple math.
I would never decrease with fork length. It will only make the bike unsteady. This I doubt would happen with todays suspension lengths.
I wouldn't worry about it so much. Pick a fork acording to your riding style and the classification of your bike. In your case it would be inbeatween XC and light FR.
