I am going to upgrade my Disco Monkey to Disc Brakes. I have two choices of roter sizes to buy. 185mm (7") or 160mm, can I get away with the bigger one???
-
WOW, is everybody on here sleeping!!!! WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!!!! ;D
Anyhow, in answer to your question...you can run a 210mm rotor front and rear if you'd like. Now depending on your fork and who you talk to, you should never run larger than a 160 on a QR fork. But I say, BS. I have a RS Psylo QR that I've run an 8" rotor on for years and rode it in some knarly places (Bootleg Canyon, NV) with no problems. Heck even SRAM/RockShox just came out and said you can run an 8" rotor on the Duke and Psylo both with no problems. So go for the biggest you can get and ride.

Im running 185 front 160 rear, I wouldn't go bigger than 160 on the back but that up to you, I find my hopes have more than enough power with that combo. dmc

Do you guys ever have a problem with grinding with discs? The main reason I am switching over to discs is because, my rim was ruined last weekend by some rough terran particles got stuck in my pads and ground down my rim. Will this be eleminated with discs?
-
Nope, never been a problem for me. Any good disc brake is self cleaning and would not be subject to such hassle. Also the pad material of disc is much harder than that of a rim pad so I'd find it highly unlikely that particle's would get stuck in them.
The only issue you may have, as mentioned before, is a slight rubbing sound occasionally, but it's very minimal usually.
