Title: What do you think of this stem?
Post by: tmaybee on November 12, 2003, 01:29:14 am
Hi. I am looking at getting a lightweight stem and I have seen these on ebay for a while (they don't seem to ever get any bids). It is supposed to be 128g 135mm 5o rise. I emailed the seller about the weight and he said that it was weighed at the post office so it is accurate.

I haven't seen that type of steerer tube clamp used very often so that is another thing I am not sure about.    :D

What do you think? Is is a good buy? Any opinions would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks very much,
Trevor

That single bolt handlebar clamp would probably only work with flat bars.  I don't think you'd be able to mount risers.  I would not be too comfortable with the single bolt steerer clamp, but it may work perfectly well.

Trevor- looks very similar to the series of Specialized ti. stems that came across eBay when I was specing my Oz out.  I would have bought one if  a 100mm 0 degree showed up.  Only drawback is the hassle a single bolt offers.  You might also keep an eye out for the discontinued Sterling aluminum line from Trek which was as light or lighter and comes with ti. bolts.  They are usually underbid and most have a fixed faceplate too.

I used to have a 135 mm 0 degree stem on my vector 2  and then a 135   15 degree (I think)  and I liked the length of both but I would have preferred a rise in between the two.  With the crosslink steering tube being longer, I think the 5 degree would be perfect.  For $30 including shipping (and no duty troubles because it is in Canada), I think it looks like a good deal.

The vector 2 stems had only one bolt as well so although it is a hastle, I am used to it.
