Has anyone mounted a 48T chainring on an 18" 856? I have the frame with the hole in the seat tube that you can use canti's with and I think I may have a problem getting the front der high enough.
I want higher gearing and I know I could go to a 11-30 XTR 8 speed cassette but a 48T chainring would make the bike more active by bringing the chain closer to the pivot level.
I just thought I would ask before I take the bike down to the lbs and try throwing a crank with a 48T on it.
Thanks,

that's an intersting concept, but i don't think it can be done...however a good LBS might surprise you with what they can modify...
let us know

I have 46-34-24 on there now. 8 speed M950 48T chainrings are VERY hard to find. I can get 9 speed M952 in a 48-36-26 set, but that may slow the shifting with an 8 speed drivetrain.
I did notice quite a difference when I switched from 42-32-22 to 46-34-24 in "activeness" and also shifting performance (BIG improvement).
For the 48T, I guess we'll see.

the seat tube bend and or the hole prevent the front deraileur going high enough...i think 46 is as big as you can go,but if you can try before you buy what have you got to lose?

I've also noticed on previous posts your a weight weenie,have alook at this only uses 44t max though,

Hey Simon. Yes, I must admit I am a weight weenie. ;) But I never sacrifice function for weight. [smiley=turtle.gif] That's why I have magura HS22's on my bike... they weight about 900g so they are by no means light, but they work VERY well.
I think going to a 2 ring setup would be too much of a sacrifice. Maybe for a race bike but I don't race anymore. I may end up going to a 11-30 cassette if a 48-36-26 ring set will not fit. I guess we'll see. I just bought a spare 12-32 Ti XTR cassette so I would have to sell that first.
thanks for the link.
