Howdy,
Inspired by the post asking about fair market value, I want to get some feedback on a deal I just did for a '97 957.
I own and worship a '97 857, so when this deal came along, I couldn't help myself.
Here's the deal:
1997 Proflex 957 -
Carbon Cross Link, NR-2 front, NR-4 rear
Full XT kit except:
Altek V-levers
Kooka Cranks and rings
Girvin Bar
Selle Race Day saddle
XT rapid-fire shifters (to be replaced with SRAM immediately...)
Mavic 220 - Hershey naked and XT hubs
Girvin Ti clipless, with CroMo axle
CHROME FINISH... ahhhh yeahhh
The Price? $455 delivered.
Assuming the bike is gently used and in solid mechanical shape, what's the consensus on this purchase? A good deal? Not so good? There is very little to compare this to these days...
Also, anyone who has ridden both the 857 and 957 - I would appreciate any insight into the difference in ride between the two.
thanks,
tg/memphis

Sounds like a smokin' deal to me... assuming that the bike is in good shape.

Yeah that's a good deal, no lie.
The 957 is still my xc bike of choice. There is no real noticeable difference in ride feel between the two frames. The NR-4 has a bit more adjustability and the 9 has a custom tube set. Those tubes and the lack of paint makes it a bit lighter than the 8.
The 9 can suffer a bit of oxidation, but it just looks ugly it doesn't really hurt the integrity. I ended up painting mine just to cover it up.
If you want to sell off the xt shifters, I'm interested. Also if you decide to pass on this deal, post up where I could get a look at it.

That is beautiful. Just out of curiousity, why no big chainring on an XC rig? Seems like it's missing something... ???

Never used the big ring except to grind meat off my legs. Plus I like the far better ground clearance without a big ring.
Kiwi, thanks for saving that photo. Haven't seen that in a good long time now!

Thanks Doods. I appreciate the information. The shifters will be coming off, and I am interested in replacing them with some SRAM stuff, maybe Rocket or Attack (those are the only Shimano compatible ones, I think.) Email me for a pic, at dixiedirtbag@yahoo.com
peace out...
