My friend's Trek Liquid 20 uses Hayes HFX9 disc brakes. On a recent ride something like a high pressure plastic valve fell off and he lost all of his brake "liquid" and ability to break. The valve is located on the hand lever mount.
He is without a rear brake and thus unable to ride his less than a year old bike.
Where can he get hayes parts? Or may there be a homemade solution. The pressure valve, still in place on the front brake is a simple plastic plug.

The part is called a "Reservoir Plug. And probably what happened is either whoever bled the brakes either stripped the plug (plastic part) or didn't tighten the small screw enough so when your friend applied the brakes the plug POPPED.
Either way go to your LBS and have them order you a new on from Hayes. I've attached an exploded view image of the brake lever the Plug is part # 43 in the diagram.
