Title: Fox Talas Rear Shock - update
Post by: Old Proflexer on October 03, 2003, 01:16:05 am
well, i rode the shock, pics in the gallery, for quite a while and was comfortable with the performance.  just one little bug that was driving me crazy however.

the shock was rattling, could have been check valves or such going on and off, sounded like a marble rattling around inside a small container, or a loose cable rattleing against the frame.  i emailed fox, explained what was happening, was told it shouldn't be doing such, got an ra number, sent the shock in, they rebuilt it and quite promptly sent it back - minus my oring, schraeder cap and bushings.

i remounted the newly rebuilt shock with my 5th bushings and set out for a spin.
rattle, rattle rattle - need i say more.
the shock works well and is fully adjustable as previously discussed -
the noise is obnoxious and i'm gonna put the shock on my backup bike.

i'll be emailing the company to complain, politely, and offer them an opportunity to make things better.  if they decide not to - there's a few websites i'll be visiting real soon

not happy with how the money was spent -

just f.y.i.

How does it ride compared to other shocks you have?  How does the bike handle when you change the to the various shock lenght?

thx

I was disapointed with the noise my risse terminator made so exchanged for an astro5,odd we buy shocks on the recommendations of others but rarely do we try them out first fitted to our own bikes,we just purchase them and expect them to be perfect, recipe for disapointment I suppose.Simon [smiley=blankstare.gif]

Hi chaps,

Just got hold of a SID Race Rear (Ex demo from an lbs) and when it arrived it had a rattle, even off the bike!

Sent it back and they sent it for a re-build by the rockshox importer, came back 5 days later all quiet and working a treat, btw it is lighter than a SID XC and has rebound adj.
They said the shim stack inside had come apart!

I have been looking at the Talus a bit... I am wondering if the noise you are hearing are "ball bearing" shaped pieces which control fluid in the small chamber as seen here: http://www.mbaction.com/detail.asp?id=796
This shock seems to have positve reports whith no mention of the noise though on other bikes (such as the Fuel, I believe); so I would think you received a defective unit.
I also would like your opinion on your favorite rear shock as you seem to have tried quite a few...

Mine did, spoke to Kevin Risse he said they do make a noise and they where aware of the problem, its due to the check valves operating, they do offer quieter plastic replacement valves but they don't seal as well, replaced for an astro5 very glad too, quiet and feels better to, Simon.

Must be a defective unit. The Talas I rode was silent on some pretty rough trails.

Had a look at the site jeff77 detailed, looking at the talus in operation the valves seem to operate as shut off valves not as check valves so they should stay seated once set to the desired shock lenght,so if the shock is noisy then as jeff77 and matno say must be a defective unit,Simon [smiley=depressed.gif]

the shock will be heading back again today -

talked to the c.s. and tech guys and they stated that the shock must maintain a minimum pressure so as not to release a nitrogen charge in the length adjustment housing.  they stated that info should be in the manual (i still couldn't find that piece of info in their 2003 shock manual) but no one could give me the required minimum pressure.  they stated that if you release all the air pressure in the air shock then refill it - you'll probably have to send the shock back in for a nitro recharge.

either my mistake or their lack of appropriate info distiributed with the shock or in the online manual

fun huh?   [smiley=furious.gif]

how did that feature get designed in?  i guess they figured if the seal blew, the pressure would drop and only the shops are authorized to replace seals and recharge the nitro.

i also guess they figure we're all a bunch of  "Bobs"   [smiley=diaper.gif]

I have only tried first or second generation air shocks, they shuckssss. seems like the new generation of air shucksss are not any better, just lots of marketing. they only good for racing or wt weenies.
