Title: Low Tech Suggestion...Chain Hygiene

Boys, I love using Coleman "White Gas" lantern fuel to clean my chain. It is an excellent solvent, leaves no residue and is darn inexpensive. I use a pie tin to soak my chain in. You have to use the usual good sense methods though....don't use this in the basement or other enclosed area or you'll hangin' with Warren Zevon before your time. Give it a shot. 8 bucks (US) per gallon at Wal-Mart or the like. Dan.

Sounds good.  

Now I may be crazy but I don't usually clean my chain unless it is really muddy.  I lube it with a mixture of parafin wax, pedros syn lube and transmission fluid (auto) heated in a pot on the stove.  It usually lasts a long time and doesn't attract dirt.  

Anyone else use wax ???

I like using a large Gatorade bottle to soak my chain in.  Gatorade, because it got a wide mouth cap.  Toss the chain and solvent in the bottle and give it a shake.

kerosene for me.......only when the chain is not visible for mud OR i have been silly enough to ride on the beach.

good suggestion, but be sure it "dries"..it never will though between the links/plates, you have to work it out by putting too much lube on. and then it gets all gunky and starts the process all over again. IMO

if i feel i have to "clean a chain" now ..I don't use solvent just more lube and wipe it off.

WD-40 ....spray a whole lot of it.. :)
