Post by: royboycv on April 15, 2013, 01:20:56 pm
Hi, just got a LARGE ANIMAL frame ,which i was going to build up from parts from my XP-X (856 ) with the needle roller bearing mod , just to find a crack in the head tube at the top ,is the frame junk , or has any one had this problem and fixed it , was thinking of an ali ring over the top ,heated up and shrunk on ? Any body ,or just get another frame ?

Shovelon is your man for all ali welding. He is a cycle frame maker/builder and can fix most things. His ali welding is second to none! If he doesnt pick up on this thread PM him for some advice.

Proflex had a rash of cracks at the headset from overly tight headset fits.

Shrinking a sleeve over the cracked area will work fine.

Welding works but you need a mandrel to slip inside. Or use a worn steel headset race sourced from your LWS for cheap and groove out and fill the crack with weld. Then shrink out the race.  The frame is 7005, so the frame will work without heat treat. Just make sure the filler is 5356.

If the crack was at the bottom, I would source another frame because welding that area is tricky.

I once had a 757 on which the headtube started to crack in the upper headset.

"Someone" filled the crack for me, but a half of a dozen rides after, it started to crack again.
In the end, the head tube was cut from the rest of the frame and replaced by a new one (a little thicker than before).
The frame was resprayed, and the stickers were gone.

It worked very well and eventually I sold the frame (it was a way big and I thought I needed a large).

Here is the final result:

Which "Animal" (or indeed, "Beast") do you mean?
PRO~FLEX/K2 used that name on x56's, x57's and the Y-frame Downhill model.
