I just thought I would post this, even if it might be common knowledge.
Back in 2005 when I did the Fox shock upgrade, I really was paranoid about running more travel than the stock shock had. I am still not that keen on it. However, back then a Fox Float wouldn't fit in the back without an adapter because of the valve stem location. But now both Rock Shox and Fox shocks have the valve stem at an angle you can bolt one straight on (albeit upside down). However, only a 8.5" length shock will really do the job. The stock Noleen was 8.25" and ran only 8mm of sag. The next shortest length is 7 7/8" and will cause the rear end to sit lower than intended, and lower the BB a bit.
So, if you want to update your rear shock I recommend you find an 8.5" shock (with a valve stem at a 45 degree angle, and not 90 degrees form center) and set the sag to 8mm+1/4"=14.35mm (or 22.6%), as a baseline setting. Ok, so somewhere between 14 and 15mm will do. :D
Air shocks for everybody! :D
I am also working on a simple adapter kit for the same shocks to mount in the Girvins. Feel free to bug the crap out of me until I get it done. ;)

They come with shims, so you get one that's the closest width but narrower, and use the shims. I haven't done it yet myself though.

A bit pricey but very nice. I wonder if they are on sale in UK?
