The nice new storage I installed for the server last month promptly failed miserably late last night in the middle of upgrading to the newest version of linux.
We're back online, however, the last working data backup was from several weeks ago, so anything posted since mid April is forever lost in the vortex.
I'm still working on a bunch of little things, but all the big stuff should work by now.
-
I saw it was down for awhile. Then looked wonky when it first came back up.
No good deed goes un-punished you know.
-
Evidently not! Damn, I'm tired... been at this for 21 hours, and I haven't slept for ~36. Going to crash into a nice comfortable bed in very short order.

I gotta ask: does the server have a RAID array of any sort? Even a simple two-disk mirror would prevent a disk failure from wiping out the database.
-
It's looking pretty good to me.
Thanks for your work.

Aw rats, I had just posted my very best post ever --- ;)

Not even close! This entire server runs on an old box hidden under a desk, built using spare parts. No RAID support at all - this is absolutely not commercial grade equipment.
-
Just glad we've still got a community here, what's a bit of data loss between friends ;)
-
Keep up the good work, man.
For me, it's incredible after 14 years the last Pro-Flex model came out, there is a comunity like the one we have right now.

no worries, things like this happen....being one of the newbs to the forums, all the picss and stories I have added since joining are lost, oh well...Cest La vie...well, at least the pics I can re-add :)

Can I risk sounding ungrateful and ask why we aren't hosted somewhere in a commercial data centre?
Maybe "commercial" is the give away, i.e. a charge would be involved, but surely the limited amount of storage we need is not so great that we couldn't get free hosting somewhere?
Or am I missing something?
Top marks to those that keep this site running, but I'm just concerned that it will all collapse irretrievably one day.
Col.

True that.. If for some horrendous reason we couldn't get in touch, there is a Proflex group on facebook, proflex mtn bikes, as a fallback or work around.

It really comes down to picking what is important to us. In the world of internet hosting, there's one big tradeoff - well, one big one that we care about. There is either free, or no forced advertising. We tried the free route in the past, it was good for the first 6 months or so, then the hosting provider increased the ad content until it was more annoying than useful.
As for commercial grade gear, it's not so much the storage that costs there, it's the whole package - storage, processing power, data redundancy, software upgrades and support, bandwidth - and some of those are recurring costs, not just initial outlay. A small commercial server will cost $10k+ initially, plus the monthly charges for support and bandwidth. Anyone investing in something at this level is virtually always looking for ways to increase their revenue instead of ways to give away possible income.
And last but not least, even commercial solutions don't solve everything. Sure, you're protected from single point of failure, but you're still in danger from virus corruption, theft, natural disaster, and the like. The only good solution is improved data backups.

They will rebuild, We can repost, And it WILL be great!!! People can ride again!!! lol

we have been refugees before.it was built and we did come

I cannot thank you enough for keeping this alive Grimjack.
I am by nature, a freak a bit of a hermit and stick with my favorite stuff to the bitter end. All the contrary information regarding the Proflex is just so much meaningless babble to me and I love my 855 and 856's with the purportedly weird forkage.

A RAID setup would not cost very much. All it would take is two SATA hard drives and this RAID controller for $16: http://cgi.ebay.com/PNY-Technologies-NetCell-SR5000-5-Port-RAID-Card-/270749021016?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f09e63358
I have several of these NetCell RAID cards in use and they all work splendidly.

Do we need to do a whip round?
Col.

A what?
-
A whip round means a collection of money. British slang not a fancy bit of computer or a dodgy fetish pass time, lol.
I agree though, if a solution is to all chip in and buy something then im willing. But I know nothing about computers so i'll leave it up to Grimjack. He is God!

Dang. I was all set to go grab my chain whip, my bung threader, and my nipple wrenches. ;)
Still no bids on that RAID controller. Only 16 bucks.

was there another failure the past couple of days? I had no probs with my ISP, but haven't been able to access these forums at all since the night of the 17th...

I'm in for $50.

Do we need to do a whip round?
Is'ent that a BMX vert trick? lol
I just wanted to thank Grimjack for all his work. If not for him we would never had this great site!!
Thank You

aye kudos to Grim, for all his work n dedication with the server and forums for all us k2/ProFlex riding peeps ;)

Grimjack had an ISP problem.

Yes, I did. They decided to change my IP without warning me in advance, and I didn't notice until I started getting emails from disappointed members. Thanks for the heads up by the way folks! Then it took me a while to figure out what had happened - of course, I assumed the worst, figuring I had something wrong on my end again. Imagine my surprise when I figured out what had happened... I've had the same IP for well over a decade, so it was a bit of a surprise.
On the positive side, my pipe to the internet is significantly bigger now - the reason my IP changed was that they upgraded me to 2.5 times the speed I had before.
On the subject of RAIDs, I'm going to suggest we hold off. To be frank, over the years I've had way more problems with hacks or security breaches than I have hardware failure, and the only measure that works in all cases is backup data. Furthermore, the worst thing that's ever happened - the recent hard drive failure - still only set us back by about 3 weeks of posts, which, to be honest, is pretty trivial in the grand scheme of things. Also, it would have been even less if I'd gotten the backup scripts installed and running again after putting in the new hard drive - normally I have backups that are at most 2 weeks old.

Sounds like a plan to me.
Thanks again,
Terry

There is a reason all but the least expensive brand-name servers come with RAID arrays. What happened over the past few weeks is why. I don't even run my desktop PC without a 2-disk RAID, and I don't use my laptop for anything important so it doesn't matter if its single hard drive fails.

True enough... and if it were winter outside, and miserable, I'd be a lot more likely to bite the bullet and set one up. However, it's summer, so I'll spend my spare time outside on the pedals instead. You're welcome to come over and play with the server in the meanwhile. :)
