I'm in the process of upgrading the suspension of my bike and wanted to hear your thoughts.
It is a K2 Profex 5000 with a 5th element CVT/5 coil 7.875x2 mounted on new holes next to the standard shock mounting holes. The fork is a Marzocchi Z1 BAM 130mm travel.
1st stage: rear shock.
I made my desition and it's Rock Shox Monarch 4.2 tune E, but the i2i isin't clear. I wanted to use de original monting point but if i meassure my existing setup it is 213mm between the original mounting points (using 200mm shock on the new frame holes). If i go 215x63 the bb heigh and steering angle will be increased. In other hand, going with 200x57 on the standard holes will produce the opposite effect. The bb is already high so lower a little is not a problem but for stability decreasing steering angle will make the bike more stable on high speed downhills. The frame leverage is 2,6 so the rear travel will be 6,5" and 5,8".
Maybe the longer shock a more sag will do the trick until the stage 2. In both cases it will be mounted up side down.
2nd stage: fork
Continuing with the upgrade, the fork will be Rock Shox Revelation Team Dual Air 150mm, but this is othe story, jaja
IŽll appreciate your opinion,
Patrick

How many miles have put on the 5000 with the rear shock mod? I am currently running a Fox Float R (Thanks to DugB :-*!). It is working very well. Even rode Moab Rock Stacker and Jackson's with it. Looks like you are working on more travel for your 5000. I am running a 100mm front fork.

A lot miles after the mod.
After the smart shock funeral ;D I put on a vanilla coil RC and use it for about 2500 miles. I ended hating it... then the 5th element for another 8000 miles till today and it's great. But now it's time for something advanced and lighter... the 5th + ti spring weight 700g and still have some value (ebay). The frame is handling very good (I'm aggresive rider) without any signs of problems.
About the fork it's a Marzocchi Z1 Bam 130mm, 30mm stanchions. It's great too, a little flexy on rough downhills. Because of the fork, the standover and bottom bracket heigh is a little higher, nothing to worry about but for my fork plans I have a little concern about it.
Today my thoughts are on the 216 x 63 shock on the standard mounting points and a welding job to tap the mod.
Thanks,

I've had Fox Floats front and back for 5 years now (200mm with 51mm of travel). I was just looking at things all over again and crunched some numbers last bight. A 8.5" (216mm) long shock with 2.5" (63.5mm) of travel will work perfectly if you set the sag at 15mm. Your ride height will be where the roflex engineers wanted it, and you are 1mm within the recommended sag for the shock.

Finally, put on a new Rock Shox Monarch RT3 8.5x2.5 (216x63) up side down on the oem mounting points. The weight is great, performance top and the look needs to get used to it.
For all 4000/5000 looking for a new shock, this is the one, definitely!
