After being the proud owner of a more and more creaking 5500C for some years, I did it! I did the jiffy lube. But nothing jiffy about it. It took me quite some time to translate, but more: understand the instructions. Afterwards I can say that there is nothing wrong with the instructions, I'm just not the smartest person around I think.
I started the operation without completely understanding the things I had to do, but nevertheless I finished the job within a couple of houres. And the most important fact: IT WORKED! No more creaking...at least not when I tried to make it creak and moan in the backyard (no more time to go out for a ride ofcourse).
So: a big salute to OP, the writer of The Decreaking Bible.

i did mine again over the weekend - best to be sure that the crossbolt is tightened to specs to avoid noise.
as for the j.l. itself, our resident tech experts took much of my mindless garage mechanic babble, refined it over the years and now it appears as a 'how to'
check to make sure all is tight, every nut, bolt and skewer.

OP,
how often do you do the JL? I can imagine it to be a bit rough for the plastic thind around the non-threaded cup?

i usually do it every couple months or more often as necessary but i'm a maintainence freak. some do it twice a year but like most everything on a bike, when properly lubed/maintained, parts can last a long, long time. i'm still on the original bushings and they're close to 5 years old and still fresh.
the bushing i think you're referring to, is what you are trying to protect when lubing - the cups should slide in and out easily when the pinch bolts are loosened.
lube it or lose it

twede's the one with the talent
b.t.w. d.t. - i passed on that 7.875" 03 model fox vanilla rl with AVA on ebay. was going to bid on it but decided to look for a helix pro or new cheap vanilla rc. it was of interest to put on an air shock but started reconsidering my motives - i was going to try to rebuild my backup 4500 to a very light xc bike with avid mech discs and thought the shock would be the best place to start. maybe if i can find one cheap i'll do the change

@ Di.R.T:
If i had this PDF about a week ago, the jiffy lube would indeed take only 5 minutes!

Anyone still have a copy of the JL Bible? It seems the .pdf is corrupt.

Completed the Jiffy Lube. Non drive side bushing looked brand new. Drive side was completely disintegrated. Nothing but bushing dust left.
Any good replacement bushings for swing arm pivots for 856?

you might want to put out a new thread for this request...
