Title: 5500C dilemma
Post by: jtolputt on July 14, 2009, 08:56:28 am
Hi everyone, My dilemma is, I have a nice 5500c all built up but I also have a spare 4500c frame as a spare.

Question: How likely is it that any part of my 5500c frame will fail and ill have to bring in part or all of the 4500 spare?

Just seems a shame to have a  perfectly good frame just sitting there but I just cant get it out of my head the big  "WHAT IF"

I just have a nagging feeling the swing arm is gonna give on me or something, I just couldn't stand not having my 5500

some issues are BB shell, seatpost clamp area

if you ride a lot and hard, i sure would keep the spare.

the swingarm is pretty rugged, sometimes the drops will loosen, but that is usually an easy fix.

I've only ever seen one photo of a snapped carbon rear swing-arm and that was on an 857 that had just been jumped over a BIG roller and had hit the face of the rise! - Not really what these bikes were designed for!

Everything else seems to be fixable!

But I am of the same opinion, I like to have spares ready to go in case something breaks, god forbid it would be the frame or Swing-arm, but you never know!

If you can afford to keep it then just hang it on the wall as a piece of art!

Either way, ride the 5500 like you stole it! They're meant to be used (but not abused!)

i bought a spare a few years ago and built it up with extra parts.  for the most part, it just sits on the wall in the garage and is used occasionally when a bud is over and might be interested in a ride.  thought i'd get it as a backup in case i ever had any problems as the carbons were out of production.  i also picked up a preowned, never built frame and fork, resold it as my main bike has never had issues.

can't hurt to have a spare if you have the room and dollars aren't an issue - if you won't be needing it, someone else here might.
can only ride one at a time tho'
