Title: Hydraulic RIM brakes
Post by: bike kid on June 18, 2009, 09:30:48 pm
On Saturday, I saw the coolest thing ever, hydraulic rim brakes!!!!   I say they're all for the thought, and not for performance, but they would still be cool to have.  Does anyone know where I could get a set? ;D

you mean Maguras (that have been around for 20 odd years)?

And to add to that... Magura HS33's leave nothing to be desired in terms of performance!  You can get them almost anywhere... eBay... CRC... your LBS

Yep! Maguras have been around for ages, but then again I thought they were a new thing when I bought my XP-X in 1998!
They've worked super good since then, no probs and the blocks are a piece of wee-wee to change.

I'd have to say that whilst they are good, a well set up pair of XT/Avid V brakes seem to work just as well on my other bikes and are probably lighter, but the "Maggies" seem to need slightly less lever pressure on long descents, so less tiring.

don't work very well, though, from what I hear anyway...

Actually they do work well in the dry , if you fit decent blocks and spend time aligning them correctly. However, in the wet , and the mud they  are very effective at gringing down your  rims. Also they collect mud and crap real well as they work like scrapers and  mud and leaves   build round the pistons . I have a set in my bedroom ( silver HS 33's) gathering dust as i went for juicy 5's and used a 3mm steel plate to mount the caliper on the rear of my FS.

I meant the starbike ones. I know Maguras work well - they're great (once fitted - bit fiddly).

yeah, its the magura's that I saw, the guy said that they were a little finicky, but did the job. Do they work any better than conventional cable rim brakes?

   thanks for the help,

yes - they are fantastic and once set up you can forget about them. They are fiddly to set up the first place though, you need about 5 arms. Changing pads is very very simple though. Get some!

I loved the set I had. You didn't have to worry about about cable stretch and when you pulled the levers you didn't have to pull super hard to stop like cable brakes. ;)

Err...I know how to set up a rim brake with my eyes closed, and spent several years at a bike shop cranking out new builds for the showroom floor, all of which had v-brakes (standard and parallel travel)...and none of those systems came close to the new HS33's I have on my 4000/5000 bike. In all fairness, I do have the braided stainless hoses and machined aluminum boosters with the EVO2 mounts...but whatever the setup the Maguras blow away even the best v/rim brakes in braking strength (pad force at the rim), smooth travel and stiffness...I mean, trials riders, who need solid brakes, are one of the biggest audiences for hydraulic rim brakes. Also, there are a ton of pad stickiness and density options for Magura brake blocks.

Even if you're in the US CRC is a great place to buy complete HS33 setups. I scored a new HS33 "herzblut" setup a few weeks ago for around $160 US (or something like that) shipped...over the standard HS33 setup it came with the CNC machined levers, CNC machines brake boosters and a hat even my wife says looks good on me.

Got  a set of hs33's a while back now found no problem setting up once i grew two extra arms and the stopping power is awesome, i wouldn't touch anyother sort of braking now, infact i've a set of xt v brakes that i wont use cause of the magura's

Just out of interest becuase I dont find them to be so... whats the difficulty with setting hs33'3 up?

I find getting them lined up properly the pain as you have about 4 different things to tighten/loosen. The calipers can go in/out by 7mm or so and they can swivel (which requires you to undo 2 separate bolts) etc etc.

Maybe I haven't the knack. It's a job I hate I'll be honest.

Ah ok, fair enough... there is a trick though... if I remember right the recommended spacing between the pad and rim is 2mm (?)... which, if you're in the uk at least, is the exact width of a 2p coin... so... get two 2p coins... put one hand inbetween the spokes, or if your fingers are long enough over the top of the tyre, so that your fore finger can press in on one caliper and your thumb can press in on the other... put a coin between the rim and pad on each side and then "pinch" in with your thumb and fore finger so that the calipers move in and hold the coins fast between the rim and pad... you now have the correct spacing between rim and pad... and you have one hand free to align the pads up and tighten up the bolts... works a breeze for me!

Or... and only just thought of this... use a wood work clamp to "pinch" the calipers in... then you have both hands free!
