Title: Oz rebuild
Post by: Spokes on May 13, 2009, 12:10:58 pm
The time has come to start building my OZ but there are a few repairs I have to do first.

Firstly, I have had to fit a new seat post insert. Ive got the remains of the broken piece out and cleaned the frame up ready for the new insert(thank you Simon). I understand I have to use epoxy resin to bond the new insert in place, so will Araldite do the job?

Secondly the two inner quad rings were pinched and broken where the previous owner has removed the swing arm. Are the quad ring on an OZ the same size as on a 857?
The pivot inserts look the same size so im thinking the quad rings could be the same also?
If they are, I can still get a frame rebuild kit for a 857 on Ebay.

Any ideas?

Cheers
Chris

Best thing to check with Colin, I know he has some kits left still.

I'm not sure if the quad rings for an 857 kit (RK001):

are the same as for an x500/Oz (RK008), so maybe a bit of a gamble to try it?

But the good news for you is that I do have a small number of Oz Pivot rebuild kits left.
Only £8 + £2 P&P each (in the UK). (+£1 if paying by Paypal please)
Bank transfer preferred or I will take a cheque.

PM me for details.

Colin you little beauty !

In that case can I have 2 kits please. One for the Oz and a spare for when the 4000 needs changing.
If you pm me your details, I'll send you the money right away.

Any idea if Araldite is ok to bond the seat post insert in?

Cheers

Whilst the frame is completely stripped (except head set) and swing arm is detached I thought I'd weigh them.
The frame weighs 1.7 kg and the swing arm 1.1 kg.  Even though the swing arm is much smaller than frame, it surprised me that it weighs only only a bit less. Its a solid bit of kit that arm!

Is that without the swingarm bits and pivot? Mine was a bit more, but still that is pretty good. ;D

Yes thats 1.7 kg with the pivot and all inserts removed but with a race face head set installed. It feels really light to hold where as the swing arm at first felt heavier to hold. I new this couldnt be right so I weighed them.
Your right though it is pretty good and I only wish I had a spare frame to hang on my work shop wall as It looks so cool hanging there at the moment!

Any one got any views on what to use to bond the seat post insert in?
I have Araldite here, which is a two part epoxy resin, but not having done this before dont know if it is suitable or not  :-\

Alderite is the Epoxy of choice for many loose inserts on carbon frames so far.

Chris

I've weighed my spare Oz Frame with a Headset installed, but no pivot kit or shock.

Weight:   Frame: 1447g    Swing Arm: 1068g   Total: 2515g
