Title: Replacement spring for the Smart Shock2 on a 5000?
Post by: Gee3 on April 03, 2009, 07:50:46 pm
I did a search and couldn't find anything (or my search skills suck...) but is there somewhere that sells a spring that'll work on a Smart Shock 2?  I have a '98 5000 and I'd like to replace the OE spring because the yellow paint is chipped and it's a tad rusty.

Is there anywhere that sells them on the 'net?  Or are there compatible ones that'll drop right in?  I weigh around 175lbs but I don't have a clue on the spring rate?  Although the original manual says the rate should be 550 for my weight.

I am new to messing with this bike so please excuse my ignorance on these things.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Gary

I just found an old print out of the Spring rates and part #'s for the 1998's: 5500, 5000, 4500, 4000SE and 4000

Rider weight          Spring Rate          Part Numbers
up to 140              350 (SM)              NB175-350X*
130-170                500 (MD-400)       NB175-500X
160-200                550 (LG-500)        NB175-550X
190-230                600 (WB)             NB175-600X
230+                    650                     NB175-650X

*Note: "X" after the spring rate represents color of spring: B (black), R (red), Y (yellow)

If the spring you have have is the correct weight, then have it powder coated. They will blast it clean and coat in the color of your choice.

that's what I was thinking - it'd be cheaper than a new spring I would have thought :)

Thanks!  I never thought about that.  Although per the chart I need a 500 or 550 spring rate.  I currently have the 350 in there.

Anyone have an extra one sitting around for cheap or trade?

Bringing it up again...  anyone know where I can find the springs on the 'net?

Or if anyone has an extra 500 or 550 spring you want to sell please let me know!   :)

Thanks!
