Im thinking about getting some Magura rim brakes as people seem to rate them well. But dont know much about them. Apart from one being better than the other,whats the difference between HS 11 and HS33. Ive also noticed HS22 for sale on ebay sometimes,are these any good as they are not on the Magura web site?

Used hs33 in fluoro,yellow years ago,very smooth and great stoppers.Not sure of the difference in the models though

I havent really settled on a price to spend yet but have been doing the usuall ebay trawl. Im used to XT v's and wondered if Maguras would really be that much better considering power and weight?
I cant afford to to convert to discs and Im using carbon crosslinks. My wheels and hubs are in great shape so thats why I thought Maguras might be the next step.
If you think it worth looking at which of the three types which would you guys recomend?
This would be for my OZ project which is coming along nicely.

I started with xt v's then got some hs33's the difference is a hell of a lot better just be careful when you first start using magura's if your used to v's cause i nearlly went over the handlebars the first ride out :)

Hi mate, I`ve been using the HS11 Maguras for years and they`ve been fantastic, great stopping power, plus they seem to have lots more feel than all the disc brakes I`ve tried, maybe to do with the size of the rotor being 26". I seem to spend half my time ajusting Mrs Tel and my son Robins V brakes, bear in mind they both go through a set of pads in a week and a half at this time of year, so I`m playing about once every 2 weeks trying to get them to bite just right but not rubbing bla bla bla bla. With the Maguras undo the quick release wheel over new pads in and your good to go. the pads are a little more expencive but last twice as long. They`ve been on my XPX since new and I`ve never needed to bleed them and Mrs Tel used to use the bike on her daily commute to work for around 4 years as well!
I beleve the difference betwen the HS11 and the HS33 is that the33s have a thumb wheel to adjust for pad wear on the levers so you can do this on the fly, wish mine had that. I also dont use the brake bosses that link each brake up as I`ve never found the need for them. I also have ceramic brake surfaces on my wheels (Bontrager X racelites) but have`nt really noticed much difference between these and my old Mavic UB`s.

Well put Tel, all I can say is "seconded"
I have HS11's on my XP-X and they're very good, but then again the XT V's on my 4000se are also very good.
The V's are lighter, bu the Magura's are very reliable and easy to set up.
I had HS33's on a 5500, and I couldn't really say they worked any differently to HS11's.
Same for me, never needed the arch boosters, the Vector legs bow out nicely when I clamp on the Maggies, but they still stop me alright!

yup - fit and forget.
But... I would disagree about being easy to set up. I have spent over an hour before now trying to get some to fit. There must be a knack - but I've never discovered it - and I've fitted them many times now...
However once done - you can leave them for years, literally.

HS-11's were commonly found on bikes as standard OEM - and were not as adjustable etc as the HS-33's. The BIG PROBLEM with magura rim brakes in the old days was that:
+ the cables were brittle. (nowadays replace with performance hoses)
+ they were a nightmare for newbies (lots of online advice now- i.e. use a quick release lever and a brake booster)
+ they are tricky to bleed (again, online advice is great nowadays)
I used to use them in competition and once had to do a race with no front brake because it leaked in the car on the way to the race. This was a common feature back then.

Ok, so the difference is basicly a pad adjuster and now all those problems have been sorted out they sound like they might be worth a try. Thanks for your opinions guys.

Hey all!
I'm back from vacation and saw this post. I have the latest HS33s on my 4000 and really love 'em. I'm using the grey pads now (for my ceramic coated Mavic 618 rims) but would love to try something a little softer, just for kicks. These things stop like crazy, are easy to adjust and bleed after you do it once, and it seems that nearly all of the parts made over the years are more or less interchangeable. For example, you can install a set of EVO2 adapters even on old Raceline brakes. Replacements parts are readily available (esp. via Chain Reaction Cycles) and some nice CNC/hop-up goodies are also available (I have a set of braided stainless hoses and Echo levers on mine, though the stock levers are more comfortable).
I definitely recommend this upgrade...at the time I bought mine it was cheaper to buy them from CRC, pay the dollar-to-pound exchange rate and have them shipped versus picking up that one eBay seller's $99/side HS33 offering.

HS33's on my OZ
way better in the dry than the wet, very good pad life, I think i rode around 1000 miles on my front pads . The little wheel is usefull, but be warned , dont wind it up and then grab the lever or you will be over the bars !
If / when you get them spend some time aligning them properly, with a tiny amount ot toe in, and the blocks centered on the rim. Its fiddly but once its right the blocks will last and not scream when appiled.
I have used superstar and disco brake blocks, although the magura ones lasted the longest
Downsides, alot of metal for crap to build upon. Had some much leaf mulch in the booster the front wheel refused to roll last weekend, alot less effective in the wet, had to get the lbs to change the hose whe i fitted riser bars.

I would recommend avid, they are great brakes, and reasonably priced. :)

Ive been looking at these also but Ive read that the cnc lever is not as comfortable as the standard one?? Is the cnc lever a 4 finger lever or is that just the photo?

As far as I've seen from the pics at Chain reaction Cycles and other European sellers (who tend to have more Magura spares than US sellers) the lever is really the same, it's just that onee is forged and the other is machined. The basic shape is the same, and it's pretty darned comfy. I switched my levers to CNC machined ECHO ones, but the Magura are more comfortable by far...but I wanted a little CNC bling on my ride, heh heh
If I hadn't purchased my HS33s already these Herzblut ones would be on their way to me already ;-)

:)OK Its done. A set of HS33's in RED with the CNC lever are winging their way to me as I type. The shop is apparently a main Magura dealer and also has a deal on citrus green pads made by Onza. They are softer than the original black and half price at £10 a set of 4. So I got a set just for the fun of it ;D. May be I'll start a new thread with a list of the bones I break when I fly over the bars first time out :D :D Dont know why Im laughing cos I know Its gonna hurt!! ha ha.
